NATIONAL PREMIERES

Angi: Fake Life, True Crime (Angi: Crimen y mentira) (Spain)

This docuseries is about the murder of fashion designer Ana Páez, committed by María Ángeles Molina, aka “Angi.” On February 19, 2008, 35-year-old Ana Páez was found dead in a tourist apartment in Barcelona, naked with a plastic bag covering her head. The police initially hypothesized that her death was caused by a sexual crime or a sadistic game gone wrong — until their investigation brought Angi to their attention. Given what actually happened, the media dubbed the murder “the almost perfect crime,” for which Angi is currently serving an 18-year prison sentence.

The two-part docuseries also sheds light on Angi’s past, her marriage to Juan Antonio Álvarez Litben, and the businessman’s unexpected death in 1996. The police investigation and the judicial proceedings into the death of Álvarez Litben and the testimony of family members and people close to both cases make up some of the never-before-published material that viewers will have access to for the first time.

Angi: Fake Life, True Crime, a Netflix Docuseries, premieres globally on Thursday, May 1, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

Pale Mountains (Brennero) (Italy)

Set in the present day, this mystery-crime drama series is inspired by the Night of Fire in June 1961, when the Befreiungsausschuss Südtirol (aka South Tyrolean Liberation Committee) began committing a series of attacks in Bolzano, capital of the predominantly German-speaking South Tyrol province in northern Italy, in its efforts for South Tyrol to secede from Italy and be re-annexed to Austria.

The series opens with a murder in Bolzano, where the residents are of Germanic or Italian heritage, including those investigating the homicide: Eva Kofler (Elena Radonicich, La porta rossa, 1994), a young and ambitious deputy prosecutor from a wealthy German family, and Paolo Costa (Matteo Martari, All Heart, The Bastards of Pizzofalcone), a charming but reckless Italian police inspector with a troubled past. The two get on like oil and water, but work together to find the murderer.

Because the deceased, Hans Mayer, was a German-speaking resident, Eva believes he was the seventh victim of the “monster of Bolzano,” a serial killer whose earlier victims were all native German speakers, targeted because of their alleged discrimination against Italian-speaking citizens. Paolo, though, thinks otherwise. Whoever the perpetrator is, members of Bolzano’s law enforcement and criminal justice systems have been after them for years, including Eva’s father, Gerhard (Richard Sammel, A French Village), former head of the Bolzano prosecutor’s office, with whom Paolo had worked on past “monster”-related cases.

In addition to preventing more murders, Eva and Paolo also have personal reasons for catching the killer. For her, it’s a matter of proving herself worthy to her father; for him, it’s a matter of justice, given that he lost both his leg and his former partner, Giovanna (Naike Anna Silipo, Domina), while attempting to stop the murderer three years earlier.

Mayer’s death will not be the last, and new murder victims will not all be German speakers. As Eva and Paolo delve into past and present aspects of the serial killer case, they uncover hidden truths while also solving other crimes that are unrelated to the “monster of Bolzano.”

Costars include Giovanni Carta (Mafia Only Kills in Summer), Lavinia Longhi (La porta rossa), Paolo Briguglia (The Law According to Lidia Poët), Lia Grieco (Luna Park), and Anita Zagaria (The Bastards of Pizzofalcone), amongst others.

Pale Mountains, a Walter Presents title, premieres in the US and Canada on Friday, May 9, exclusively on the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel and other Walter Presents partner channels.

The General’s Men (Il nostro generale) (Italy)

This historical drama stars Sergio Castellitto (Conclave, Don’t Move) as General Carlo Alberto dalla Chiesa, who created the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit to combat the Red Brigades in 1970s Italy.

In 1973, General dalla Chiesa is transferred from Palermo to Turin, shifting his work from battling the Mafia to putting down the Red Brigades. He is the first to grasp the extent of the danger posed to Italy’s already-fragile democracy by the terrorist group, whose goal is to subvert the state through kidnappings, assassinations, and bombings. He also knows the need to counter it with new investigative means.

Despite resistance from top leadership, dalla Chiesa keeps at it until the Carabinieri’s Special Anti-Terrorist Unit is born — a select group of young men, all highly trained and capable of moving in circles close to Red Brigade members. The commitment by the “general’s boys” to fight against terrorism includes no vacations, no breaks, and no private life. Their courage, combined with dalla Chiesa’s strategic skill and insight, contributes to the unit’s success in winning the war against the Red Brigades.

Madam President (Prezidentka) (Czech Republic)

This romantic comedy asks: What if the most powerful woman in the country just wants a taste of normal life? Such is the situation with Kateřina Čechová (Anna Geislerová, The Ipcress File), the first female president of the Czech Republic. While she commands the nation with grace and authority, behind closed doors, she longs for something far simpler: an escape from the rigid confines of power, if only for a night.

Under the cover of darkness, Kateřina finds a way to slip past her security detail, disguising herself with a wig and an ordinary outfit. For the first time in years, she steps into the world without the weight of her title pressing down on her shoulders. As she wanders through the streets, reveling in her newfound anonymity, she stumbles upon Petr (Ondřej Vetchý, Major Case Squad), a sculptor. Drawn to her mystery and charm, Petr has no idea that the woman he’s falling for is the leader of the nation. Their romance blossoms, but the illusion can only last so long. As the truth begins to unravel, Kateřina finds herself at a crossroads, torn between the personal freedom she desperately craves and the duty she has sworn to uphold.

Madam President has its US linear debut on Saturday, May 31, at 9pm ET, on Eurochannel. (Folks who don’t have access to Eurochannel can stream the movie.)

Jana, Marked for Life (Jana – Märkta för livet) (Sweden)

Based on the award-winning “Jana Berzelius” crime novels by Emelie Schepp, this six-part Nordic noir crime thriller follows Assistant Prosecutor Jana Berzelius (Madeleine Martin, The Fighter, Alex), who joins the investigation into the murder of a high-ranking official at the Swedish Migration Agency. Although the list of suspects is long, a shocking discovery at a boy’s autopsy changes everything for Jana: He bears the same scar that she does, and the markings carved into his skin trigger buried memories of her own dark and violent past.

Brilliant yet emotionally cold, just like her prosecutor father, Jana realizes the key to uncovering the killer is also the key to unlocking her own hidden origins. As more sinister memories resurface, she must track down the murderer before the police do.

Costarring Pernille August (Young Royals), August Wittgenstein (Das Boot), Zlatko Buric (Triangle of Sadness), and Thure Lindhardt (The Bridge), Jana, Marked for Life, a Viaplay Original, begins streaming in the US on Thursday, May 8, on Viaplay on Prime Channels and other Viaplay partner channels.
