Oh, to be in Sweden. The new Nordic noir thriller Modus is about to premiere and we wish we were there to watch it. Fingers crossed that it screens beyond the fjords, as well.

International Emmy® Award-winning writers Mai Brostrøm and Peter Thorsboe (Unit One, The Eagle, The Protectors) adapted Fear Not, the fourth title in the “Vik/Stubø” series of crime novels by Norwegian author Anne Holt, for the Scandinavian noir TV series Modus.

Modus stars Melinda Kinnaman (The Eagle, Klovn) as Inger Johanne Vik, a criminal psychologist and profiler drawn into the investigation of a series of Christmastime murders across Sweden, after her autistic daughter Stina (newcomer Esmeralda Struwe) witnesses one of them.

On Christmas Eve, Bishop Elisabeth Lindgren is murdered in Uppsala, and it is to this crime scene that the National Police sends Detective Ingvar Nymann, played by Henrik Norlén (Johan Falk, Arne Dahl), to investigate. Meanwhile, dead bodies are turning up in Stockholm.

Nymann and Vik join forces and begin their frantic search for the killer. Although the causes of death vary amongst the victims, Vik starts to see a pattern: the murders are somehow connected to a ruthless international fundamentalist network.

If it doesn’t play on Vimeo due to geo-restrictions, then check out the extended trailer below. It isn’t subtitled, but you can still get the gist. Note that you must have Flash enabled in order to view it.)

The eight-part serial costars Marek Oravec (Crossing Lines), Simon J. Berger (Crimes of Passion), Krister Henriksson (Wallander), Cecilia Nilsson (Maria Wern), Johan Widerberg (Ocean’s Twelve), and Alexandra Rapaport (The Sandhamn Murders).

As with many other Nordic noir series, Modus includes themes about political and societal issues, including human rights and intolerance, and raises questions about religion and the nature of love itself, through the crime story threads.

A Miso Film Sweden production co-produced by Sweden’s TV4, Nadcon Film, and Norway’s TV2, the eight-part Modus is directed by Lisa Siwe (The Bridge) and Mani Maserrat Agah (Arne Dahl), and produced by Sandra Harms (Nina Frisk) for Miso Film Sweden.

Modus premieres one week from today, 23 September 2015, in Sweden. Other channels in Europe that are set to air the series include TV2 Denmark, TV2 Norway, RUV in Iceland, and ZDF in Germany.

FremantleMedia International is handling worldwide sales. There have been no announcements made yet regarding Modus screening in the UK or US; however, if the English-subtitled trailer is any indication, it could (and should). Stay tuned for updates.
