Three of the top Scandinavian stars of the big and small screen are set to star in the Danish film adaptation of the novel You Disappear.
Award-winning actors Nikolaj Lie Kaas (Men & Chicken, The Keeper of Lost Causes, The Killing), Trine Dyrholm (The Legacy, A Royal Affair, The Spider), and Michael Nyqvist (The Girl King, 100 Code, Millennium trilogy) are set to star in the new psychological thriller Du Forsvinder (You Disappear).
The film is adapted from Christian Jungersen’s bestselling novel You Disappear, which stayed on Denmark’s Top 10 Bestsellers list for more than a year, won the country’s Readers’ Book Prize in 2013, and is the first of Jungersen’s books to be brought to the screen.
In the film, respected schoolteacher Frederik (Kaas) is arrested and charged with fraud for millions. However, for the last three years, Frederik has had a brain tumor that has changed his personality. His wife Mia (Dyrholm), with help from attorney Bernard (Nyqvist), must muster up all her strength to get him acquitted and save her family.
The disturbing and touching You Disappear takes film-goers on a journey into the brain and its complex structures, and raises questions about who we are, what free will is, and what we are responsible for, if every action we take is the result of the brain’s impulses.
It’s a story of the power of the brain and the despair of human will — told through the depiction of one family’s struggle to keep themselves and their lives together while under extreme duress.
You Disappear is a DKK 26 million (€2.6 million/$3.9 million, based on today’s exchange rates) Zentropa production, written and directed by the multiple award-winning Danish director Peter Schønau Fog (The Art of Crying). It is produced by Louise Vesth (A Conspiracy of Faith, The Absent One, Melancholia) for Zentropa, with support from the Danish Film Institute, TV2 Denmark, TV4 Sweden, Den Vestdanske Filmpulje, Film Väst, the Swedish Film Institute, and Nordisk Film.
Distribution of the film in the Nordic territories is being handled by Nordisk Film, and on a worldwide basis by TrustNordisk.
Filming on You Disappear is set to start on 28 September 2015 in Mallorca, Denmark and Sweden, with an expected domestic release date of February 2017.
