Netflix announced today that actress and film director Helena Bergström will direct the new Swedish Netflix Film Dancing Queens.
Even if you don’t recognize her name right off the bat, it’s likely that you do know her face, as Helena Bergström has appeared in a few Swedish series that are popular with Euro TV fans in the US and beyond, including Annika Bengtzon: Crime Reporter, Missing, and Spring Tide.
Soon Bergström will return behind the camera to direct Dancing Queens, a drama she co-wrote with actress-screenwriter Denize Karabuda (Missing), about daring to embrace the unpredictable and being open to love and friendship in whatever form it comes.
The film stars Molly Nutley (Thicker than Water), Marie Göranzon (Beck), Claes Malmberg (Death of a Pilgrim), Christopher Wollter (Quicksand), Rakel Wärmländer (Gåsmamman), Ann Westin (The Fjällbacka Murders), Max Ulveson (Greyzone), Mattias Nordkvist (The Restaurant), Razmus Nyström (Maria Wern), André Christenson (The Lawyer), Emil Almén (Real Humans), Fredrik Robertsson, Robert Fux (Full patte), Louie Indriana (E.T. Flow), Dominika Peczynski (Army of Lovers), and Fredrik Quinones, who makes his acting debut in, and is the choreographer of, the film.
The story centers on Dylan Pettersson (Nutley), a 23-year-old young woman from a small island in the Swedish archipelago with big dancing aspirations. When she’s talked into cleaning at the struggling drag club Queens, the club’s star dancer and choreographer (Quinones) accidentally discovers Dylan’s talent. She desperately wants to be a part of the show, but she’s a girl — and it’s a drag show — yet where there’s a will, there’s a way.

A project of Sweetwater Productions, the film’s producer is Joana Sorobetea, with Colin Nutley and Mikael Bergkvist as executive producers.
