NATIONAL PREMIERES

Sara – Woman in the Shadows (Sara – la donna nell’ombra) (Italy)

Teresa Saponangelo (Vincenzo Malinconico – The Italian Lawyer, The General’s Men, The Hand of God) stars in this new crime drama series as Sara, a tired and withdrawn former secret service agent who wants to know the truth about the suspicious, premature death of her son. For this, she leaves her self-imposed prison of solitude and asks Teresa (Claudia Gerini, Suburra: Blood on Rome, Under the Tuscan Sun), a former colleague and friend, for a favor.

Well, nothing is for nothing, so the you-scratch-my-back-I’ll-scratch-yours deal requires Sara to return to spycraft, and, in an instant, she finds herself entangled in her old life. Despite having withdrawn from this world for a while, Sara, nicknamed “the invisible woman” by those she had worked with, has still got it; her talent in intelligence work, not to mention her skill in lipreading, hasn’t faded one bit.

Working alongside Sara are Pardo (Flavio Furno, The General’s Men, The Promised Life), a cop, and Viola (Chiara Celotto, Mixed by Erry, Vincenzo Malinconico – The Italian Lawyer), a photographer who happens to be Sara’s late son’s partner… and pregnant. As they investigate a series of crimes that grows increasingly sinister, Sara must balance navigating old ghosts and dangers with learning who her son really was. It’s difficult as well as dangerous, but this is how Sara returns to life and takes on what she does best: deliver justice.

Based on the “Le indagini di Sara” (“The Investigations of Sara”) crime novel series by Maurizio de Giovanni (“The Bastards of Pizzofalcone” and “Inspector Ricciardi” novels), the six-episode series also features Carmine Recano (The Sea Beyond), Massimo Popolizio (Romanzo Criminale), and Antonio Girardi (The Lions of Sicily), amongst others.

Sara – A Woman in the Shadows, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Tuesday, June 3, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

The latest addition to the “Tatort” crime drama franchise in North America is this series, which follows working class detective Frank Thiel (Axel Prahl, Eisland, Blame Game) and Professor Karl-Friedrich Boerne (Jan Josef Liefers, Arthur’s Law, The Tower), the upper-crust coroner, as they investigate quirky cases in the city of Münster, considered the cultural center of the Westphalia region of Germany.

Barracuda Queens: Season 2 (Sweden)

The girls are back, five years after the events in Season 1 of this girl gang heist drama series. It’s now 2000. Lollo (Alva Bratt, A Class Apart) is back in Stockholm after her studies in Paris. The rest of the girls have been quite bored, living at home and adapting to a normal, non-thieving lifestyle. Lollo’s return, though, quickly has them considering moving out — but how will they get the money to make it happen? They’ve also promised Lollo’s mother, Margareta (Izabella Scorupco, Hidden: Förstfödd), that they wouldn’t do any more robberies.

Maybe there’s another way. After all, the girls are professionals and they have really missed that thrill. They know that there is a lot of money in the art world, and for the Barracuda Queens, nothing seems impossible…

Also starring Tindra Monsen (The Sandhamn Murders), Sandra Zubovic (JJ+E), Sarah Gustafsson (Huss), and Tea Stjärne (The Wizard’s Daughter), Barracuda Queens: Season 2, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, June 5, exclusively on Netflix.

Isolated (Utö) (Finland)

Set in the Finnish archipelago on Utö, a small isle and Finland’s southernmost inhabited island, this mystery thriller series follows the residents after they become involuntarily isolated. It all starts when a deafening sound is heard, the electricity goes out, phones won’t connect, boats won’t start, and the birds and animals flee. The residents suspect the cause of these disruptions is probably the usual: a solar storm that has affected the power grid or a submarine cable that has been pulled into a rut by a passing ship. Or perhaps a state of emergency has been declared on the Finnish mainland. But other unexplained phenomena are happening, too.

As the weeks go by, they still have no contact with the outside world. This, combined with the decreasing amount of food and drinking water and the increasing level of uncertainty, begins to tear apart the previously idyllic island community. What is everyone willing to do to survive?

The eight-episode series stars Elena Leeve (Maria Kallio, Arctic Circle), Joonas Saartamo (The Paradise, Rebecka Martinsson), Ville Virtanen (Bordertown, The Glass Dome), Pihla Viitala (Arctic Circle, Deadwind), Kati Outinen (Arctic Circle, Peacemaker), and Turkka Mastomäki (Helsinki Syndrome, Bordertown), amongst others.

Isolated, a Walter Presents title, premieres in the US and Canada on Friday, June 6, exclusively on the PBS Masterpiece Prime Video Channel and other Walter Presents partner channels.

Set amongst the reindeer herds of northern Scandinavia, this drama feature follows Lena (Risten Anine Kvernmo Gaup, Makta), a Sámi artist who, along with her young son, leaves her life in Oslo and returns to her hometown in Sápmi to begin a residency involving women reindeer herders in her Sámi community in northern Norway. Her mother is thrilled that Lena has returned, despite Lena’s insistence that it’s only a temporary thing.

Being back reminds Lena of a past decision that still fills her with shame and regret, and causes members of the community to be wary of her intentions. They also don’t care for her provocative artwork, as it isn’t what they deem Sámi art should be. But then Lena’s path takes an unexpected turn when she meets Mahtte (Nils Ailu Kemi), a male herder who dreams of becoming the manager of his family’s reindeer, but is at odds with his mother. When romance grows between Lena and Mahtte, her past threatens to derail their relationship.

Families Like Ours (Familier som vores) (Denmark)

Set in Denmark in a not-too-distant future, this drama follows the aftermath of the Danish government’s decision to evacuate its citizens due to the rising water levels — with people scattering hither and yon and bidding farewell to the friends, families, homes, schools, and lives they’ve known. Those who can afford it, especially after real estate investment values plummet when all property in Denmark becomes worthless, travel to affluent countries, while those who don’t have the means must rely on government-funded relocation that takes them to more challenging destinations. In the midst of these sudden and drastic changes, some individuals are overcome by hatred and division, while others choose to nurture love and foster new beginnings.

One amongst the mass evacuation is Laura (Amaryllis August, The Count of Monte Cristo), a high school student in love for the first time and on the cusp of graduation. When news of the evacuation breaks, the course of her and her family’s lives are changed forever — with Laura forced to choose between the three people she loves the most.

At the peak of her career, Nora is accused of having had an affair with one of her sources in a big case. This leads to her editor calling her back from London and suspending her from her job, and her return to her childhood home to stay with her father, the intention being to lie low until the scandal has cooled off. But when she’s given an anonymous tip about an unsolved missing persons case, she can’t resist, so she puts the lying low bit aside and starts digging.

Back in the mid-’80s, two girls disappeared from the ferry traveling from Denmark to England, and no one has seen them since. After Nora receives an envelope with old photos of the two missing girls, she starts her own investigation into what happened to them. It turns out that the cold case has an unexpected connection to a notorious serial killer. As her delving starts turning up more clues, Nora begins to fear for her own life, as she suspects another killer is following her every move…

Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft. (France)

Cocaine Air: Smugglers at 30,000 Ft., is about a real-life crime, dubbed “Air Cocaine” by the media, that took place more than a decade ago — and caused a huge scandal for former French president Nicolas Sarkozy when he was investigated for a possible link to the criminal activity (although this might not be covered in the show).

Here’s what happened: On March 20, 2013, four French nationals, including the pilot and co-pilot, both ex-military flyers, and two passengers, were about to take off for Saint-Tropez, France, from the airport in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on a Falcon 50 jet. Except they were grounded by authorities who arrested them for cocaine trafficking due to the 680kg (~ 1500 lbs) of cocaine found in 26 suitcases on board the private plane.

The thing is, none of them had the profile of an international drug smuggler, and no one knew who the luggage belonged to. So, who was telling the truth and who wasn’t? Who was involved in the case? And what was hiding behind the mountain of drugs?

This true-crime docuseries returns with five episodes in which journalist and former police investigator Sebastian Richelsen dives into some of the most notorious crime cases in modern Danish criminal history. He focuses on one criminal in each episode, delving into that subject’s childhood, youth life, and adult behavior with the help of sources, relationships, journalists, and psychologists, to try to determine when things went wrong and when evil took over their mind.

The Last Settlement (Am Ende – Die Macht der Kränkung) (Austria)

This six-part drama is part of the “Die Macht der Kränkung” (“The Power of Insult”) anthology series inspired by the eponymous nonfiction book by psychiatrist Reinhard Haller. Each season of the series revolves around a self-contained storyline in which the main characters gradually become living time bombs due to various insults (actual or perceived), and personal tragedies become triggers for additional misfortunes.

In this season (“Am Ende” translates to “In the End”), David (Golo Euler, The Gryphon) dies too young. But his funeral reveals more than grief, as a letter from the deceased, read aloud to the attendees, accuses his loved ones of inflicting wounds that made him sick. As blame spreads and tensions ignite, the story rewinds, exploring David’s life through the eyes of those left behind, including his younger sister, best friend, mother, wife/widow, and son.

Costars include Antonia Bill (Tatort: Cologne), Mohamed Achour (Tatort: Cologne), Barbara Auer (Berlin Wall), Angelina Häntsch (Charité), and León Orlandianyi (Vienna Crime Squad), amongst others.

Mafia (Maffia) (Sweden)

Inspired by actual events, this Nordic noir crime thriller charts the transformation of Sweden in the 1990s — evolving from a relatively tranquil nation untouched by organized crime into a land marked by intense gang conflicts and violent shootouts. The series touches on a critical time in Swedish history, when acts of violence such as shootings were unusual, almost unthinkable, but where cigarette smuggling, in particular, became the prelude to a new type of organized crime.

The six-episode series follows the life of the notorious gangster and criminal visionary, Radovan “Jakov” Jakovic (Peshang Rad, Bäckström, Jana – Marked for Life, Before We Die, Gåsmamman), chronicling his journey from poverty to wealth. Against Jakov is police officer Gunn Thörngren (Katia Winter, The Boys, Granite Harbour, Sleepy Hollow, Dexter), the lone cop who sees the looming Mafia menace, hidden in the shadow of cigarette smuggling.

As the story begins, both Gunn and Jakov are underdogs, forced to play a daring game to circumvent their superiors. It’s not long before they develop a connection with each other. Each is convinced they are using the other for their own benefit, but their relationship will have devastating consequences for both of them.

Costars include Jens Hultén (Conspiracy of Silence), Helena Af Sandeberg (Quicksand), Linus Wahlgren (Crimes of Passion), Cedomir Djordjevic (Before We Die), and Dragomir Mrsic (Alex), amongst others.

Best Friends (Una donna per amica) (Italy)

Set against the breathtaking coastal scenery of Trani, Italy, this comedy follows Francesco (Fabio De Luigi, When Mom Is Away), a well-meaning but slightly clumsy lawyer whose closest companion is Claudia (Laetitia Casta, Arbitrage), a vibrant and independent veterinarian. Their friendship is effortless, built on years of laughter, shared experiences, and a mutual understanding that seems unshakable. They navigate life side by side, convinced that love will never interfere. But love, as it turns out, has other plans.

When Claudia meets Giovanni (Adriano Giannini, Bang Bang Baby), a charismatic park ranger, everything shifts. What starts as a passionate whirlwind romance quickly escalates into marriage, with Francesco, ironically, officiating their wedding. Watching his best friend embark on a new chapter should bring him joy, but instead, it stirs something deeper within him. For the first time, Francesco is forced to confront emotions he’s long ignored, emotions that don’t fit neatly within the confines of friendship.
