The Children’s Train (Il Treno dei Bambini) (Italy)
Based on The Children’s Train, the best-selling novel by Viola Ardone, this epic and moving film is a journey through both poverty and the generosity of postwar Italy, as seen through the eyes of a boy torn between two mothers. Set in late 1940s Italy, the story follows Amerigo (Christian Cervone), the seven-year-old son of Antonietta (Serena Rossi, The Bride), the latter of whom makes the difficult decision to send her son from their home in Naples to one in the north in order to give him a better life.
Boarding one of the “happiness trains,” Amerigo spends the winter up north, where he catches glimpses of a life away from poverty, and where a young woman, Derna (Barbara Ronchi, Imma Tataranni), welcomes him and takes care of him. At her side, Amerigo gains an awareness that will lead him to make a painful choice that will change his life forever. It will take him several years to realize the truth: Those who love you do not hold you back, but let you go.

Ace of Base: All That She Wants (Sweden)
This uncensored docuseries looks at one of the most successful bands of the 1990s: Ace of Base, the pop quartet whose contagious #1 pop/dance hits “All That She Wants,” “The Sign,” and “Don’t Turn Around” helped them to become Sweden’s third-biggest pop export after ABBA and Roxette and to have one of the highest-selling debut albums globally of all time [(Happy Nation (aka The Sign)] and over 11 million monthly streaming listeners on Spotify.
Featuring candid interviews with band members, managers, colleagues, and celebrities, including music icon Clive Davis and rapper/producer Wyclef Jean, as well as private, unseen home movie footage and intimate diaries, the three-episode series chronicles the band’s unexpected ascent to stardom and its accompanying highs and lows — including Ulf Ekberg being threatened by right-wing extremists, Jenny Berggren getting attacked by a German fan with a knife in her home, and disagreements over songs and money that eventually led to the band’s demise.

Freezing Embrace: Season 1 (Hautalehto: Kylmä syli) (Finland) — English-dubbed
Based on the fourth title in Christian Rönnbacka’s popular “Antti Hautalehto” detective novel series, the first season of this crime drama follows Chief Inspector Antti Hautalehto (Mikko Leppilampi, Arctic Circle, Bordertown) as he investigates the mysterious, almost weekly drownings of young men in the river in the small town of Borgå. As the investigation continues, Antti begins to suspect a fellow cop of the killings, and soon he and the entire Borgå police force are suspected of protecting one of their own. But there is more to the case than meets the eye, and it isn’t until Antti begins to follow a different line of inquiry that he gets close to the truth and to the real killer. (Video is the English-subtitled, not English-dubbed, version)
The English-dubbed version of Freezing Embrace: Season 1 begins streaming in the US and Canada on Tuesday, December 31, exclusively on MHz Choice and its digital channels, including MHz Choice on Prime Channels.
