Netflix has announced the start of production on Stolen, a new feature film adapted from the best-selling eponymous novel.
Based on the critically-acclaimed, best-selling novel Stolen by award-winning author Ann-Helén Laestadius, the film Stolen (Stöld) portrays a young woman’s struggle to defend her indigenous heritage in a world where xenophobia is on the rise, climate change is threatening reindeer herding, and young people choose suicide in the face of collective desperation. The story also lays bare the tensions that arise when modern ideas come up against a traditional culture with deeply-rooted patriarchal structures.
Elin Kristina Oskal plays Ella, the film’s lead character — a role that marks the actress’s acting debut in a feature film. Said Elin:
“It’s incredibly cool to get to know the film industry from the inside – I have always been curious about it. I’m so grateful to be a part of this!”
The cast also includes Martin Wallström (Beck), Lars-Ánte Wasara, Ida Persson Labba, Pávva Pittja (Midnight Sun), Ingahilda Tapio, Magnus Kuhmunen, Simon Issát Marainen, Niilá Omma, and Anne Lajla Westerfjell Kalstad (Skáidi), amongst others.
Adapting the novel for the screen is Peter Birro (Monica Z, 438 Days), with Elle Márjá Eira (The Sámi Have Rights, Ealát) directing the film. Author Ann-Helén Laestadius is an executive producer on the project.
Production of Stolen recently started in Sápmi, the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people, which stretches across the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Said director Elle Márjá Eira:
“We’re in the midst of production right now. It has been exciting and demanding days in minus 35 degrees. We love snow! I am so impressed and proud of the whole cast and crew – especially the Sami. It’s also incredibly beautiful to be able to speak my own language, which is Sami, on set.”
A Swedish- and Saami-language film, Stolen is set to launch globally on Netflix in 2024. (You can set a reminder for it now at www.netflix.com/stolen.)
Stay tuned for updates.
