Filming has commenced in the Tyrol region of Austria and the country’s capital of Vienna on Totenfrau, a six-part crime drama based on the novel of the same name, the first title in Austrian author Bernhard Aichner‘s international best-selling “Totenfrau” trilogy.

Totenfrau follows Brünhilde Blum, a loving wife and mother of two children, and the owner of a funeral home in a well-known ski resort. Life is good… until she is shaken to her core by the accidental death of her husband. When Blum realizes that the supposed accident was actually a murder, one triggered by her husband’s discovery of some terrible secrets, she begins searching for the truth and embarks on a mission of revenge — in the process opening the door to her own dark past and becoming the hunted instead of the hunter.

Starring as Blum is multiple-awards winner Anna Maria Mühe (Bauhaus: A New Era, Dogs of Berlin, NSU: German History X).

Costars include Felix Klare (Tatort), Yousef Sweid (Unorthodox), Shenja Lacher (Detective Ellen Lucas), Robert Palfrader (Hotel Sacher), Simon Schwarz (Altes Geld), Gregor Bloéb (Murder by the Lake), Michou Friesz (Inspector Rex), Gerhard Liebmann (Anatomy of Evil), Hans Uwe Bauer (Blochin), Sebastian Hülk (Das Boot), Andrea Wenzl (Tatort), Wolfram Koch (Dark), Britta Hammelstein (Crime Stories), and Peter Kurth (The Typist).

An Austrian-German co-production of Mona Film, Barry Films, and SquareOne Productions for global streaming service Netflix and Austrian public broadcaster ORF, with support from Cine Tirol, Totenfrau is produced by Benito Mueller and Wolfgang Mueller for Barry Films, and Thomas Hroch and Gerald Podgornig for Mona Film Produktion GmbH. Al Munteanu is the co-producer for SquareOne Productions.

The series is directed by Nicolai Rohde (Tatort), and written by Barbara Stepansky (Outlander), Benito Mueller (Das Boot), Wolfgang Mueller (Das Boot), Mike Majzen (Pagan Peak), and Nicolai Rohde (Cologne P.D.). Stephan Burchardt (Skylines) is the cinematographer, and Kai Finke of Netflix and Andrea Bogad Radatz of ORF are the editors.

Totenfrau will premiere on ORF in the second half of 2022, followed by the worldwide premiere (exclusive of Austria) on Netflix.

Stay tuned for updates.
