NATIONAL PREMIERES

Arne Dahl: Season 2 (Sweden)

The new season of this crime drama opens with Sweden’s National CID reassembling the A Unit team of elite special ops cops two years after it was disbanded, owing to a series of brutal murders of Polish women hiding out across the country.

Leading A Unit now is former team member Kerstin Holm (Malin Arvidsson, Alex), who’s brought her colleagues back together, including former Mr. Sweden Gunnar Nyberg (Magnus Samuelsson, The Last Kingdom), strategic thinker Arto Söderstedt (Niklas Åkerfelt, Annika Bengtzon), tech wiz Jorge Chavez (now played by Alexander Salzberger, Beck), and Jorge’s wife Sara Svenhagen (Vera Vitali, Bonus Family), the team’s paedophilia and trafficking expert.

New to A Unit is Ida Jankowicz (Natalie Minnevik, Real Humans), the military-trained, multi-lingual recruit who struggles to fit in with the close-knit group. And working alongside them is former A Unit member Paul Hjelm (Shanti Roney, Hassel), who’s been promoted to Internal Affairs and whose personal problems are interfering with his work there.

The second season is adapted from Books 6-10 of Arne Dahl‘s (pen name of Swedish author Jan Arnald) “Intercrime” series of crime novels. The five stories feature Alexander Karim (Johan Falk), Lisa Henni (Fallet), Charlotta Jonsson (Wallander), Christoffer Nordenrot (Fallet), Kalled Mustonen (Blue Eyes), and Adam Pålsson (The Bridge).

Arne Dahl: Season 2 premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, May 1, exclusively on MHz Choice. Viewers in America can also watch it on the MHz Choice channel on Amazon US.

(Viewers in the UK can stream Season 2 on Amazon Video and Netflix, purchase the digital download from iTunes, or get the DVD.)

The Court: Season 1 (Réttur) (Iceland)

Magnús Jónsson (Case) stars in this thriller as Logi Traustason, one of Iceland’s most brilliant lawyers and its most troubled. The man is a scoundrel — he lies and cheats and is a convicted killer who spent four years in jail for the manslaughter of a young man when Logi was 18 years old. To this day, he doesn’t remember what happened.

Logi spends his post-prison days on the other side of the law. Having opened his own legal practice and gone bankrupt with it, Logi joins another firm but doesn’t make partner. So he jumps ship to Réttur, a small and financially unstable firm owned by Brynhildur (Jóhanna Vigdís Arnardóttir, Case) and Hörður (Víkingur Kristjánsson, World’s End).

The private lives of these two laywers aren’t simple, either, yet they are basically the only thing standing between Logi, an alcoholic and a ladies’ man on top of everything else, and his self destruction. In his determination to uncover the truth about what really happened that fateful night all those years ago, Logi’s demons threaten to send him spiraling ever further into alcoholism. And this doesn’t include his being the prime suspect in a crime of a sexual nature and the target of those who’d like to see him dead (or at least maimed).

But Logi hasn’t hit rock bottom (at least not yet), and the trio of attorneys must tackle their day jobs amidst all their personal dramas.

Each episode features new cases for the Réttur team that are as dangerous as they are diverse. From narcotics smuggling and human trafficking, to illegal debt collectors and bank fraud, they see it all and defend them all.

The first season features Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson (Cover Story), Sveinn Geirsson (The Lava Field), and Egill Ólafsson (The Viking Sagas).

The Court: Season 1 premieres in the US on Thursday, May 3, exclusively on Walter Presents and the Walter Presents channel on Amazon US.

Forgive Us Our Debts (Rimetti a Noi i Nostri Debiti) (Italy)

This is a film and not a series, but it’s a Netflix made-for-streaming movie that hasn’t been and won’t be shown in cinemas, which is why it’s on this list.

Anyhoo, the drama follows Guido (Claudio Santamaria, Romanzo Criminale), a reserved, solitary, and debt-laden guy who loses his job and is hounded by debt collectors. The only way for him to get back on his feet and get the creditors off his back is to work for them gratis until his debts are cleared.

Enter Franco (Marco Giallini, Rocco Schiavone), a ruthless collections expert by day, a rather whimsical family man by night, and the guy responsible for training Guido in his new career. As the two men work together, Guido encounters individuals with money who don’t want to pay up and people who’ve lost everything and couldn’t pay if they wanted to. When he starts following his conscience, the devilish Franco is forced to reveal his true nature.

Written and directed by Antonio Morabito (The Medicine Seller), the film costars Jerzy Stuhr (Historie milosne) and Flonja Kodheli (Remember).

Forgive Us Our Debts, Netflix’s first Italian Original film, premieres globally on Friday, May 4, exclusively on Netflix. You can add it to your queue now.

The Rain (Denmark)

This sci-fi thriller opens six years after a virus carried by the rain wiped out almost all humans in Scandinavia. When two Danish siblings emerge from the safety of their bunker, they find all remnants of civilization gone.

Yet there is another group of young survivors, so they join together and set out on a danger-filled search for more signs of life through an abandoned Scandinavia. And in their struggle for survival, they discover that, even in a post-apocalyptic world, love still exists, as does jealousy and many of the other problems they thought they had left behind when the world they once knew disappeared.

The cast includes Iben Hjejle (Dicte), Alba August (Below the Surface), Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (Department Q: The Keeper of Lost Causes), Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (The Legacy), Lukas Løkken (One-Two-Three Now!), Jessica Dinnage (The Guilty), Sonny Lindberg (The Legacy), Angela Bundalovic (Blood Sisters), Lars Simonsen (The Bridge), and Johannes Kuhnke (Force Majeure).

The Rain, the first Netflix Global Original series from Denmark, premieres globally on Friday, May 4, exclusively on Netflix. You can add it to your queue now.

Death of a Pilgrim (En pilgrims död) (Sweden)

How great is it to see Rolf Lassgård (Wallander: The Original Episodes, Sebastian Bergman) back on American telly!

In this four-part drama — based on Between Summer’s Longing and Winter’s End, the first book in Swedish criminologist and author Leif G. W. Persson’s acclaimed “Fall of the Welfare State” trilogy — Lassgård plays Lars Martin Johansson, the Chief of Sweden’s National Criminal Police, who leads a new investigation into the notorious 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme.

Johansson can’t accept that the decades-old case was never solved, so he launches a new inquiry to solve it once and for all. The newest track leads to a young American journalist who committed suicide around the same time as the prime minister’s murder. Although the police examined the man’s personal items, the investigation was soon closed, despite the discovery of a manuscript describing Palme and his alleged past as a spy.

The miniseries features Helena af Sandeberg (Verdict Revised), Henrik Norlén (Modus), Ellen Jelinek (Real Humans), and Jonas Karlsson (Beck)

Death of a Pilgrim premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, May 8, exclusively on MHz Choice. Viewers in America can also watch it on the MHz Choice channel on Amazon US.

Tuer un homme (To Kill a Man) (France)

César Awards nominee Frédéric Pierrot (Polisse) and Valérie Karsenti (Maison close) star in this telefilm as Matteo and Christine Belmonte, the owners of a jewelry shop in a small town in the south of France. When an armed robber storms into the store, points a weapon at Christine, and demands the contents of the displays, she refuses. It’s their third robbery in just a few months.

Things get heated and, fearing for his wife’s life, Matteo grabs a revolver and fires two shots. Seriously injured, the would-be robber escapes and collapses on the pavement a few blocks away, where the Belmontes’ daughter rushes to help him.

This might sound cut and dried, but it isn’t, because the French legal machinery begins to run amok and social networks go berserk over the incident — forcing Matteo to prove in a court of law that his actions were self-defense and not the attempted murder of a young black man. Meanwhile, his marriage is starting to fall apart.

Code 37: Sex Crimes: Season 2 (Belgium)

The uber-talented and multiple award-winning Veerle Baetens (Tabula Rasa, The Team, Beyond the Walls) returns as badass Hannah Maes, the chief inspector of an all-male vice squad in the Ghent police department, in the second season of this hit Flemish crime drama.

Hannah has settled in as the head of the team that investigates rapes, pedophilia, snuff films, and related crimes, but the clash between the young female chief and the traditional, male bastion continues to cause conflict. This notwithstanding, they have found a way to work together, are united in their nonconformist attitude and resentment of rules and regulations, and share a sincere desire to help the victims and get the criminals behind bars.

The new season opens with the rape of an elderly woman. It’s a case that veteran cop Charles (Marc Lauwrys, Tom & Harry), alpha male cop Bob (Michael Pas, Cordon), and IT specialist Kevin (Gilles De Schrijver, The Missing) must handle on their own, because Internal Affairs pulls Hannah off active duty after suspecting that she is still conducting her own unofficial investigation into the rape of her mother.

[fvplayer src=”https://theeurotvplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/CODE-37_-SEX-CRIMES-PRESS-TRAILER.mp4″ splash=”https://theeurotvplace.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Code-37-Sex-Crimes-S2.jpg” width=”640″ height=”360″]

Reprising their roles for Season 2 are Geert Van Rampelberg (Salamander) as Hannah’s neighbor Koen Verberk, Carry Goossens (Professor T.) as her father Robert, and Ben Segers (Café Majestic) as her boss Mark Vermaelen. Joining the cast is Clara Cleymans (De Ridder), who plays Vicky Renders, a young and ambitious colleague from Internal Affairs who is appointed to help Hannah with her problems.

Code 37: Sex Crimes: Season 2 premieres in the US on Thursday, May 17, exclusively on Walter Presents and the Walter Presents channel on Amazon US.

Lettre à France (Letter to France) (France)

César Awards nominee Julie Ferrier (Heartbreaker) plays the titular France in this comedy-drama telefilm that finds the woman’s life upended by the arrival of her mother Gloria (César Awards winner Catherine Jacob, Life Is a Long Quiet River). It’s not just that Gloria shows up; it’s that France thought she was dead.

Hélas, non. Gloria, an eccentric, a singer and a wildly-free woman, is very much alive and has just shocked the begeezus out of the reserved and conventional France, who runs a company that sells religious products. As the two get (re)acquainted, Gloria shatters the convictions of her daughter, who is both fascinated and terrified by this woman who seems to be a throwback from another era.

Featuring Oscar® nominee Didier Flamand (The Screw, No Second Chance), Gil Alma (On va s’aimer un peu, beaucoup), and David Baïot (The Churchmen), Lettre à France premieres in the US on Friday, May 18, at 8:30 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

You Are Wanted: Season 2 (Germany)

This Prime Original German thriller returns for another season of action and suspense, picking up where the Season 1 cliffhanger left off.

For folks who haven’t watched Season 1 yet, the series centers on Lukas Franke (Matthias Schweighöfer, Valkyrie), a hacking victim whose personal data and online details are altered to make it look like he was the mastermind behind a cyberattack on Berlin. Now suspected of being a terrorist, Lukas tries to figure out why he’s been targeted, find the real culprits, and prove his innocence. But his efforts prove fruitless with his family, friends and colleagues, since they, like everyone else, doubt that he is innocent.

Lukas’ nightmare continues in Season 2, as he is pursued by hackers, activists, criminals, and even government agents. One of them is the head of the US Cyber Command, played by American actor Michael Landes (Hooten & the Lady, Save Me).

(As of this writing, Amazon has not released the English-subtitled trailer for Season 2. The one below is the German version, but you can still get a sense of what’s to come.)

Alexandra Maria Lara (Der geilste Tag) reprises her role as Lukas’ wife Hanna in the new season, which features Jessica Schwarz (Romy) and Hannah Hoekstra (Freddy Heineken).

You Are Wanted: Season 2 premieres globally on Friday, May 18, exclusively on Prime Video.

Meurtres dans les Landes (Murders in the Landes) (France)

This murder mystery is the first of two made-for-TV movies in the “Meurtres à…” series this month. It opens with the discovery of Juliette Laborde’s half-naked body impaled on a sculpture that is about to be unveiled. Customs officer Walter Beaumont (César Awards nominee Xavier Deluc, He Died with His Eyes Open) is sent to investigate, as just a few days earlier he had met the victim, convicted in a trafficking case, while making inquiries about possible financial embezzlement by the Labordes, an influential family from the Landes in southwest France.

The prosecutor has assigned Beaumont to collaborate with Captain Isabelle Hirigoyen (Barbara Cabrita, Eyewitness) of the local gendarmerie on the case. Although Beaumont would rather continue his investigation alone, the prosecutor believes there is a link between Juliette’s trafficking sentence and her murder.

Featuring Lilly-Fleur Pointeaux (La vie devant elles), Arthur Choisnet (Duel au soleil), and Catherine Hosmalin (Maison close), Meurtres dans les Landes premieres in the US on Sunday, May 20, at 11 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

Flemming: Season 3 (Germany)

If you’re reading this before May 15th, then the premiere of Flemming‘s second season episodes will still be underway. However, I can still give you a few spoiler-free details about what’s coming up in Season 3.

It opens two years after the events in the Season 2 finale. The first episode finds police psychologist Vince Flemming (Samuel Finzi, Tatort: Borowski, Blochin) and Berlin Homicide Inspector Ann Gittel (Claudia Michelsen, The Same Sky, Bukow and König) — ex-spouses, current colleagues, and now parents of a toddler — trying to nab a serial sex offender for a murder.

The rest of the eight-episode season features an abduction and ransom, the death of a foreign diplomat, a self-help guru’s victimization, a fatal stabbing, rival criminal clans, a suicidal caller to Vince’s radio show, and an assassination.

Returning for the third season are Oliver Bröcker (Babylon Berlin), Anna Thalbach (Inspector Rex), Maren Kroymann (The Wave), and Nadja Petri (Sibel & Max), with Götz Schubert (Bukow and König) joining the cast as police photographer Robert Anda.

Guest stars include Hannelore Elsner (No Place to Go), Karoline Eichhorn (Dark), Jean-Yves Berteloot (Caïn), Alexander Held (München Mord), Christoph Maria Herbst (Stromberg), Erol Sander (Homicide Unit Istanbul), Johanna Gastdorf (The Miracle of Bern), and Justus von Dohnányi (Charité).

Flemming: Season 3 premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, May 22, exclusively on MHz Choice. Viewers in America can also watch the show on the MHz Choice channel on Amazon US.

La bête curieuse (The Odd Girl) (France)

César Awards nominee Laura Smet (Eager Bodies) stars in this telefilm as Céline, a 30 year-old parolee trying to rebuild her life after serving ten years in prison for murder. Hiding her past (and her electronic monitoring bracelet), she reintroduces herself into society under her new identity as Héloïse, gets a job as a hotel receptionist, and finds herself endlessly walking a tightrope between truth and fiction.

When she meets and begins carpooling to work with Idir (multiple award winner Samir Guesmi, The Returned), she falls in love with him and becomes a prisoner to her own lies.

Featuring César Awards nominees Marie Bunel (Couples et amants) and India Hair (Camille Rewinds) and César Awards winner Naidra Ayadi (Polisse), La bête curieuse premieres in the US on Friday, May 25, at 8:30 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

Meurtres en Auvergne (Murders in Auvergne) (France)

The second murder mystery movie in the “Meurtres à…” series this month opens with the discovery of a woman’s dead body near Lake Pavin in Auvergne in central France. It appears that her murderer was inspired by an ancient local legend about the punishment of sinners who provoke the wrath of God: they are buried and then covered by the tears of the Devil.

For Captain Bruno Romagnat (Frédéric Diefenthal, Elite Squad), who is investigating the crime with Chief Warrant Officer Aurélie Lefaivre (Sofia Essaïdi, Mea culpa), this case hits close to home because he knew the victim.

Featuring César Awards nominee Stéphane Rideau (Wild Reeds), Arnaud Binard (Cherif), and Emilie Deville (Paris), Meurtres en Auvergne premieres in the US on Sunday, May 27, at 11 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

100 Code (Sweden/Germany)

Created by Oscar® winner Robert Moresco (Crash, Million Dollar Baby), this bilingual crime drama stars the late, great International Emmy® Awards nominee Michael Nyqvist (Millennium, Beck) and Primetime Emmy® nominee Dominic Monaghan (Lost, The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as Swedish and American detectives who begrudgingly team up to investigate a series of gruesome murders.

The dead bodies of several young blue-eyed and blond-haired women have been found in fields of asphodel flowers over the course of a year in New York — a suspected serial killer case that leaves Tommy Conley (the British Monaghan) stumped. When he learns of similar murders in Stockholm, he gets a special dispensation from the NYPD to travel there to continue his investigation.

Conley, a tough-talking, bad-ass cop who’s clueless about Swedish culture, is partnered with Mikael Eklund (Nyqvist) of the Stockholm Police, a by-the-book detective who dislikes American culture. The two men hate each other, but are forced to resolve their differences as the mysterious killings continue.

Meanwhile, affecting each of them during their investigation are their personal struggles: the guilt over the death of a colleague for Conley, and the challenge of being a widower, a single father to a young daughter, and a cop on the verge of retirement for Eklund.

As the web of shocking murders continues, Conley and Eklund are led down a path of no return in their hunt for the vicious killer.

The 12-part series features Felice Jankell (The Inspector and the Sea), Charlotta Jonsson (Wallander), Danilo Bejarano (Ängelby), Kristoffer Berglund (Fjällbacka Murders), Peter Eggers (Anno 1790), and Hedda Stiernstedt (Norskov).

100 Code premieres in the US on Tuesday, May 29, at 10 PM ET, on WGN America.

(Viewers in the UK can stream 100 Code on Amazon Video and Sky Atlantic, purchase the digital download from iTunes, or get the DVD.)

The Fourth Man (Den fjärde mannen) (Sweden)

This follow-up to Death of a Pilgrim is based on Another Time, Another Life, the second novel in Leif G. W. Persson’s “Fall of the Welfare State” trilogy.

The story finds Lars Martin Johansson (Rolf Lassgård, A Man Called Ove, Dag) investigating the notorious 1975 takeover of the West German embassy in Stockholm by German terrorists. At the time, the Swedish Security Police suspected but had no evidence that the six terrorists had help from Swedish sympathizers.

As Lars and his team continue digging, they turn up a lead from a murder in Östermalm that occurred fourteen years after the terror attack.

Helena af Sandeberg (Verdict Revised), Henrik Norlén (Modus), Jonas Karlsson (Beck), and Claes Malmberg (Saltön) reprise their roles from Death of a Pilgrim. Joining the cast are Helena Bergström (Missing), Jacob Ericksson (Millennium), Kjell Bergqvist (Spring Tide), Ida Engvoll (Rebecka Martinsson), and the late Johannes Brost (Jordskott).

The Fourth Man premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, May 29, exclusively on MHz Choice. Viewers in America can also watch it on the MHz Choice channel on Amazon US.

Presumed Guilty (Non è stato mio figlio) (Italy)

This drama series follows the Geraldi family, one of Italy’s most influential clans and the owners of a renowned pasta factory that has brought them great wealth. Led by matriarch Anna (Stefania Sandrelli, The First Beautiful Thing), the Geraldis have also amassed a vast number of enemies.

The story opens with Anna’s birthday celebration — a lavish and joyous party that becomes the horrific scene of the sudden suicide of Barbara, Anna’s granddaughter. Witnessed by the entire family, the tragedy sparks questions and all eyes turn to Andrea (Gabriel Garko, L’onore e il rispetto), Anna’s favorite son, the family’s playboy, and Barbara’s uncle.

The suicide isn’t the only tragedy that Andrea gets ensnared in; it appears that someone is trying to fit him up for crimes he didn’t commit. What’s more, information gathered by the authorities reveals a plot to destroy the Geraldis. Soon the only light in Andrea’s life is Nunzia (Adua Del Vesco, Furore: Il vento della speranza), a stripper he falls head over heels in love with.

But there is more trouble in store for Andrea and the rest of the Geraldi family — built on corruption mixed with envy, prostitution, secret pregnancies, raw love, and incestuous relationships.

The eight-part series features Giorgio Caputo (Romanzo Criminale), Stephan Käfer (Verbotene Liebe), Aurore Erguy (Cherif), Massimiliano Morra (Pupetta: Il coraggio e la passione), and Oscar® nominee Eric Roberts (yes, that Eric Roberts, Runaway Train).

Presumed Guilty premieres in the US on Tuesday, May 29, at 7 PM ET, on Eurochannel.

ADDED TO PROGRAMMING SCHEDULES

The Salento Murders (Il commissario Zagaria) (Italy)

Lino Banfi (Un medico in famiglia) stars in this two-part comedy-crime drama-mystery as Inspector Pasquale Zagaria of the Lecce Police in the Salento region of Southern Italy — a detective who has relied on his intuition and rather unorthodox methods to solve cases his entire career. On the verge of retirement, Zagaria must solve one more before bidding arrivederci to his colleagues.

A mafia clan, presumably from Calabria, has started causing trouble in Salento. They’re here to take over the territory currently under the control of Rocco Matera (Antonio Stornaiolo, Don Matteo), a skeevy mafioso who’s fooled local authorities into believing he’s a legitimate businessman and a generous benefactor to the city. Zagaria doesn’t buy it.

He also doesn’t care for the methods of his new partner Stefano Amato (Marco Cocci, Medicina generale) — a young, science-oriented Florentine who trained in America and relies on facts and scientific proof during investigations. The two men are like oil and water, but they must combine their skills and work together if they are to end the crime wave plaguing Salento.

The show features Sandro Ghiani (Anti-Mafia Squad), Luigi Petrucci (Il capitano), Rosanna Banfi (Compagni di scuola), Isabelle Adriani (Inspector Manera), Manrico Gammarota (Bulletproof Heart), and Paolo De Vita (Fog and Crimes).

The Salento Murders begins airing in the US on Tuesday, May 15, at 8:30 PM ET, on Eurochannel.

(Viewers in the UK can stream the two-parter on Amazon Prime & Instant Video.)

Au Service de la France: Season 1 (In the Service of France) (aka A Very Secret Service) (France)

A mashup of “James Bond” films and The Office (with a nod to Mad Men), this parody of secret agents and service-dom set in 1960 Paris is created by Jean-Francois Halin, the screenwriter behind the French spy satire films OSS 177: Cairo, Nest of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in Rio. Hugo Becker (Chefs, Gossip Girl) stars as André Merlaux, an intelligent and impressionable 23-year-old guy recruited by the French Secret Service.

Under Director of Operations Moïse (Christophe Kourotchkine, Match Day), three agents train André to prepare him for tackling the most delicate of missions, from becoming friends with the Germans and keeping Algeria French, to figuring out America’s obsession with communism and preserving the colonial empire. What André learns about being the crème de la crème in the world of international espionage is the devil is in the details — France’s superiority comes down to its brilliance in administrative intricacies, such as answering the telephone and getting the proper rubber stamp.

But while on his way to elite secret agent status, André falls in love with the wrong woman: Sophie (Mathilde Warnier, Caprice), a wannabe modern woman and the daughter of Colonel Mercaillon (Wilfred Benaïche, Nicolas Le Floch), the intimidating head of the spy agency.

Featuring Bruno Paviot (Détectives), Karim Barras (Daedalus), and Jean-Édouard Bodziak (Yves Saint Laurent), Au service de la France begins airing in the US on Tuesday, May 15, at 11 PM ET, on TV5Monde USA.

(Viewers in the UK and US can stream Season 1 on Netflix.)
