Kim Bodnia, one half of the acting pair that brought one of the most intriguing crime-fighting duos to telly — that of Swedish detective Saga Norén and Danish detective Martin Rohde of the hit crime thriller The Bridge (Broen/Bron) — has called it quits.
After just two seasons, Kim Bodnia (Those Who Kill) has left The Bridge, leaving worldwide fans of the show to wonder what will happen with his character, Martin Rohde, since his arrest for the murder of his son’s killer at the conclusion of Season 2.
Bodnia, who recently brought home a Best Actor award for his portrayal of Rohde, hasn’t offered up much in the way of details about his departure from the show, but insiders have shared that he wasn’t happy with the way Martin’s storyline developed and character evolved in the third season script. This leaves head writer, Hans Rosenfeldt, and his team scrambling to rework it in time for Season 3 to begin filming this Fall.
Also saying little about why Bodnia left is costar Sofia Helin (Arn: The Knight Templar), who just won the Best Actress award for The Bridge. Her Saga Norén character lost her only friend to prison, but according to Danish broadcaster DR, Saga will “lead the investigation” and “collaborate with her colleagues in order to solve a new series of murders in Malmö and Copenhagen.”
The question is: Will there be one amongst those colleagues who will develop a close and trusted bond with Saga the way Martin did?
Season 3 of The Bridge is slated to return to Scandinavian telly in Fall 2015, so expect it to screen in the UK and US in 2016 at the earliest.
Season 1 is currently streaming as a Hulu Original series exclusively at Hulu, and its (Region 1) DVD is now available for US audiences. Season 2 is not streaming anywhere in the US or UK at the moment, and its (Region 2) DVD is available for UK as well as US audiences (multi-region DVD player required).
