I know I shouldn’t put as much faith in teasers and trailers as I do, because I have lost count of how many got me really excited for the series or film, only to be supremely disappointed. But hope springs eternal, and after watching the one for The Final Problem, I am once again very much looking forward to watching a series that is still unproven. It looks to be intriguing and fun, a combination I quite enjoy.

The five-episode whodunit has quite a roster of actors, too. The ensemble cast includes Jose Coronado (The Truthers, The Snow Girl, Wrong Side of the Tracks), María Valverde (Sounds Like Love, Fever Dream, Guernica), Martiño Rivas (Nacho, Cable Girls, I Know Who You Are), and Maribel Verdú (When No One Sees Us, Elite, Death’s Roulette), along with Gonzalo de Castro (Bird Box: Barcelona, The Perfect Family, The Innocent), Cristina Kovani (Muted, Past Lies, If Only), José Condessa (Cacau, Turn of the Tide, A Filha), and Pepón Nieto (Furia, 30 Coins, The Envoys), amongst others.

And The Final Problem is based on the best-selling eponymous novel by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, a title of his that I haven’t read yet but intend to start and finish before the series premieres.

Set in the spring of 1959, the story follows thirteen people who find themselves stranded by a violent storm on a small island off the coast of Mallorca. No one could imagine what is about to unfold at the secluded hotel where they are staying: Elisa Mander, a quiet English tourist, is found dead. What initially appears to be a suicide soon reveals itself to be something far more disturbing: a murder.

Basil (Jose Coronado), a retired actor who once portrayed Sherlock Holmes on the big screen (albeit in B movies), unexpectedly finds himself taking on the role of investigator. As suspicion spreads amongst the guests, including Adela Figueroa (María Valverde), a mysterious young woman traveling with a friend, Basil joins forces with Foxá (Martiño Rivas), an aspiring thriller writer, to search every corner of the luxurious hotel for answers, all while testing the composure of Mrs. Ausländer (Maribel Verdú), the hotel’s manager.

In a place where no one can leave and no one can arrive, every guest and member of staff becomes a suspect in a crime that proves to be far more intricate and elusive than anyone could have imagined.

The Final Problem, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Friday, September 25, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

The miniseries is produced by Mod Producciones, with Fernando Bovaira (While at War, La Fortuna) serving as producer, Urko Errazquin (The Champion, Two Many Chefs) as executive producer, and Alberto Macías, Carlos Molinero, and Marisol Farré as screenwriters. It is directed by Félix Viscarret (Una vida no tan simple, Staring at Strangers ).
