Netflix has set the global premiere date for The Breakthrough, a new true-crime mystery limited series from Sweden.
The storyline of The Breakthrough (Genombrottet) reminds me of the one for the British limited series Code of a Killer, a three-part original drama about the first use of DNA fingerprinting in the UK to catch a killer, specifically the murderer of two girls.
The Breakthrough, a four-part fictional drama, is based on the nonfiction book Genombrottet: Så löste släktforskaren dubbelmordet i Linköping (translation: The Breakthrough: How the Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping) by journalist Anna Bodin and genealogist Peter Sjölund. The Swedish limited series is about an unexpected hero, an unlikely collaboration, and the hunt for a killer.
In 2004, a shocking double murder was committed in Linköping, Sweden — a case that became Sweden’s second largest murder investigation to date, and one that went unsolved for sixteen years. It wasn’t until a detective teamed up with a genealogist that a much-needed breakthrough happened. For the first time in Europe, a murder was solved through genealogical research.
The Breakthrough, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
Starring in the series as the detective and the genealogist are Peter Eggers (Snabba Cash, Blinded) and Mattias Nordkvist (Deliver Me, The Restaurant), respectively.
The cast also includes Jessica Liedberg (Sthlm Requiem), Julius Fleischanderl (The Sandhamn Murders), and Annika Hallin (Agent Hamilton), amongst others.
A production of FLX, the series is directed by Lisa Siwe (Modus), written by Oskar Söderlund (Snabba Cash), and produced by Lejla Bešić (The Fjällbacka Murders). The executive producers are Elin Kvist, Joshua Mehr, and Pontus Edgren.
