Set during the height of the Cold War, Spy/Master is an espionage thriller series that covers a week in the life of Victor Godeanu (Alec Secăreanu, God’s Own Country, Ammonite, Happy Valley), the right-hand man and closest advisor to Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. But Godeanu is also a secret agent for the KGB and must escape Romania and Ceaușescu before his cover is blown.

With only one shot at staying alive, he uses a diplomatic trip to Germany as a springboard to the United States. Helped by undercover Stasi agent and former flame Ingrid (Svenja Jung, The Empress, Deutschland 89), and up-and-coming CIA agent Frank Jackson (Parker Sawyers, A Discovery of Witches, World on Fire), Godeanu must elude the KGB and his own country’s spooks, fully aware that his defection is putting his family back home in mortal danger.

Spy/Master, a Max Original, premieres in the US with the first two episodes on Friday, May 19, exclusively on HBO Max and its digital channels, including HBO Max on Amazon. New episodes will debut weekly through June 16.

Costars in the six-part drama include Laurentiu Bãnescu (Umbre), Claudiu Bleont (Catherine the Great), Conor Lowson (The Bay), Aidan McArdle (Red Election), Nico Mirallegro (Rillington Place), Ana Ularu (The Power), and Andreea Vasile (Umbre), amongst others.

Created and written by Adina Sădeanu and Kirsten Peters, Spy/Master is directed by Christopher Smith (Temple, Alex Rider), with cinematography by Ben Wheeler BSC (The Tourist, The Baby) and Ádám Fillenz HCA (Vienna Blood, Battle: Freestyle). Antony Root and Johnathan Young are executive producers for HBO Max, with Ioanina Pavel as creative producer. Anke Greifeneder is the executive producer for Warner TV Series. The series is produced by Viktória Petrányi and Judit Sós for Proton Cinema and Tudor Reu for Mobra Films for HBO Max.
