The docuseries Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi centers on the unsolved mystery of what happened to Emanuela Orlandi, a 15-year-old high school student who vanished without a trace from the streets of Rome on June 22, 1983.

Emanuela was born in Rome but lived in the Vatican with her parents and siblings, as her father was Clerk of the Prefecture of the Papal Household at the time of her death. Her disappearance has been  linked closely to that of another Roman girl, who went missing six weeks earlier. Neither girl has ever been found, dead or alive, and both police cases remain unsolved to this day.

Since 1983, many theories have been posited about the matter, as have accusations about various goings-on related to it — from falsified evidence and alleged tracks, to the involvement of the Vatican, the (now defunct) Banco Ambrosiano, the Banda della Magliana organized crime organization, and international terrorist organizations.

In Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi, director Mark Lewis (Don’t F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer) delves into what is known to date.

Vatican Girl: The Disappearance of Emanuela Orlandi, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, October 20, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
