Check out the (skin-crawling) trailer for the upcoming Netflix supernatural film The Swarm.
Selected for what would have been the 2020 Cannes Film Festival’s International Critics’ Week (had it not been for the pandemic), The Swarm (La nuée) is the first feature film from award-winning director Just Philippot (Acide, Ses souffles), who picked up the Special Jury Prize for The Swarm at the 2020 Sitges (Catalonian) International Film Festival.
It stars Suliane Brahim (Black Spot) as Virginie, a widow and single mother of 15-year-old Laura and 7-year-old Gaston. Virginie is also a farmer, raising locusts as an edible, high-protein food crop. Despite spending countless hours working, Virginie is on the brink of bankruptcy, as she can’t seem to get the locusts to reproduce, on top of earning far too little for what she has available to sell.
Life is hard: money worries and practical problems are piling up, and tensions with her kids and neighbors are running high. But everything changes when Virginie discovers the locusts have a taste for blood.
Costars include Sofiane Khammes (Kepler(s)), Marie Narbonne (Call My Agent!), and Raphael Romand.
The Swarm, a Netflix Film, premieres globally (outside of France, Spain, and China) on Friday, August 6, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now on the film’s Netflix page.)
