Filming has started in Sweden and Croatia on Quicksand, the first original series for Netflix from Sweden, and with today’s announcement also comes details about the cast.
Quicksand (Störst av allt) is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Malin Persson Giolito (US book here, UK book here) — a taut thriller named Best Crime Novel of the Year in 2016 by the Swedish Crime Writers’ Academy, and awarded the prestigious Glass Key Award in 2017 by the Crime Writers of Scandinavia for being the Best Nordic Crime Novel of 2016.
The story centers on Maja Norberg, a popular high school student and girl-next-door type who is now the most hated teenager in the country. She’s on trial for murder following the mass shooting that took place at a prep school in Stockholm’s wealthiest suburb. Among the people killed in the massacre were Sebastian Fagerman, the son of Sweden’s richest business tycoon and Maya’s best friend and boyfriend.
To answer the questions of what Maja did or didn’t do to land herself in such a predicament, the series reveals the events of that tragic day via flashbacks — from her falling in love with the dazzling but dangerous Sebastian, to her relationship with him and his dysfunctional family, and her losing touch with her parents and friends.
The cast includes Hanna Ardéhn (30 Degrees in February), William Spetz (Solsidan), Felix Sandman (We are the best!), David Dencik (The Day Will Come, The Absent One, Gentlemen & Gangsters), Reuben Sallmander (The Bridge, Irene Huss, Maria Wern), Anna Björk (The Bridge), Christopher Wollter (Modus, The Inspector and the Sea), Evin Ahmad (Beck, Blue Eyes, Inspector Winter), Maria Sundbom (Arne Dahl, The Bridge, Wallander), Rebecka Hemse (Beck, Jordskott, 30 Degrees in February), Helena af Sandberg (Death of a Pilgrim, The Fourth Man), Shanti Roney (Arne Dahl, The Eagle), and newcomer Ella Rappich.
An FLX production for Netflix, the series is written by Camilla Ahlgren (The Bridge, The Sandhamn Murders, Marcella), directed by Per-Olav Sørensen (Nobel, The Saboteurs) and Lisa Farzaneh (Arne Dahl), and produced by Fatima Varhos (Trespassing Bergman) and Frida Asp (Bonus Family). The Executive Producers are Pontus Edgren (The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared) and Martina Håkansson (Bonus Family).
Quicksand will launch on Netflix in 2019. Stay tuned for updates.
