Swedish public broadcaster SVT has released a new, longer trailer and cast photo for The Bridge III, as well as a few details about the storyline.
The third season of the BAFTA-nominated international hit Nordic noir crime drama The Bridge (Bron/Broen) looks to be even darker and more dangerous for our Swedish heroine Saga Norén, played by Robert Festival Best Actress winner Sofia Helin.
In an interview with Denmark’s Ekstra Bladet, Helin said this in summing up Saga’s third season story: “Saga must deal with immense trials and tribulations. And she is confronted with her past on several levels. You get much more about her background. So she will have a very hard time both privately and professionally.”
When The Bridge III opens, it’s been thirteen months since we last saw Saga Norén, the lead detective for the Malmö police’s homicide squad, in that heartbreaking finale of Season 2. Deeply missing her only friend Martin Rohde, her now-former detective partner from Denmark who is serving a ten-year prison sentence, Saga is convinced that she did the right thing when she reported him for the crime he committed.
Then a famous Danish commentator and owner of Copenhagen’s first gender-neutral nursery school is found murdered at a construction site in Malmö. For the investigation, Saga’s boss Hans partners her with a new Danish colleague who has a tough time accepting Saga for who and what she is. And in addition to the murder case, Saga has a personal problem to deal with: her estranged mother.
The cast for The Bridge III includes Dag Malmberg, who reprises his role as Hans, head of the homicide squad in Malmö, Sarah Boberg as Lillian, Hans’ counterpart at the Copenhagen police, and Rafael Pettersson as John, the Swedish team’s investigator/researcher.
Joining them and Sofia Helin are (from left to right in the photo): Maria Kulle (Crimes of Passion, Annika Bengtzon), Reuben Sallmander (Irene Huss, Maria Wern), Sonja Richter (The Eagle, The Killing), Nicolas Bro (1864, The Killing), and Thure Lindhardt (The Borgias, Flame and Citron), who plays a character named Henrik. (Whether or not Henrik is Saga’s new partner, we shall see.)
Additional cast members include Ann Petrén (Jordskott, Everlasting Moments), Melinda Kinnaman (Modus, The Eagle), and Louise Peterhoff (Blue Eyes, Real Humans).
In the Nordic countries, The Bridge/Bron/Broen III premieres on 27 September 2015 on SVT 1 and SVT Play in Sweden, on DR in Denmark, and on YLE in Finland, and on 28 September on NRK in Norway.
Premiere dates have not been announced yet for the US (on either Hulu or Mhz) or the UK (on BBC Four), so stay tuned.
