C’est vrai! In advance of the US premiere of The Bureau: Season 3, stateside Euro TV fans can stream the first two seasons of the French spy drama gratuitement.
The Bureau (Le Bureau des Légendes), the multiple award-winning French spy thriller, is one heckuva binge-worthy series, period.
Based on accounts from real-world spies and current events, it revolves around the lives of undercover agents of le bureau des légendes, the organization within France’s DGSE (the general directorate of external security) that trains and handles operatives before, during, and after their missions as legends — the false identities under which they live for months or years to gather security intelligence.
Mathieu Kassovitz (Amélie, War & Peace) stars as Guillaume Debailly, codename Malotru, who for six years lived under the false identity of Paul LeFebvre, a teacher, in Damascus, Syria. While there he began a relationship with Nadia El Mansour (Zineb Triki, De toutes mes forces, The Frozen Dead), a married Syrian professor of Syrian history and geography.
Season 1 opens with Debailly’s return to Paris, where he seemingly has no issues with resuming his real life as a divorced father of a teen-aged daughter and a high-level agent within the bureau, despite being under routine surveillance and constantly checking the mirrors when he’s driving.
Then something happens that prompts Debailly to do what no undercover agent is supposed to do, ever: He contacts Nadia. As Paul Lefebvre.
It turns out that she’s in Paris, too.
As the lovers reunite surreptitiously, the agent codenamed Cyclone goes missing in Algeria. Both situations are fraught with risks to France’s national security and agents in the field, and Debailly and Nadia’s relationship could put them in grave danger, as well.
Meanwhile, Marina Loiseau (Sara Giraudeau, Divorce French Style, Rosalie Blum), codename Phénomène, is in the final stages of her training before going undercover to infiltrate the nuclear industry in Iran.
As the season progresses, one has no idea of who’s telling the truth or lying, who’s loyal or traitorous, or who’s working for whom.
Season 2 focuses on Marina’s mission in Iran, but Debailly’s story isn’t over by a long shot.
The series features Jean-Pierre Darroussin (La loi de…), Gilles Cohen (Spiral), Florence Loiret Caille (Spiral), Jules Sagot (Radiant Sea), Patrick Ligardes (Paris), Alexandre Brasseur (Maigret), Léa Drucker (Suite Noire), Jean-Marie Rollin (Main courante), Michaël Abiteboul (The Returned), and Jonathan Zaccaï (Hôtel de la plage).
The Bureau: Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming for free on Sundance Now and via the Sundance Now app for Android and iOS through 30 June 2017.
Season 3 of The Bureau premieres in the US on Thursday, 22 June 2017, on Sundance Now.
