Thematically similar to the Mexican crime drama series Women in BlueThe New Force (aka Skiftet) is about Sweden’s first female cops.

It opens in 1958, when the class of Sweden’s first female police officers graduates. They may be few in number, but these pioneers take a big step for gender equality. However, they struggle to take even the smallest step themselves, literally, as the skirts they’re forced to wear chafe like sandpaper against their thighs. What’s more, they are ridiculed by the public, belittled by the media, and scorned by their colleagues.

Assigned to the Klara police district in Stockholm, the country’s most crime-ridden district, these women start their new crime-fighting job by patrolling the city’s streets. It doesn’t take long for them to realize that their biggest problem isn’t the criminals; rather, it’s the resistance that comes from colleagues and Swedish society as a whole.
