Netflix has released the official trailer for the highly-anticipated historical drama feature Society of the Snow, Spain’s selection for the 96th Academy Awards®.
Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve) made quite a splash at film festivals earlier this year, having been selected as the closing film of the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, and winning the Audience Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, where it garnered the highest score in the history of the festival. And it will be Spain’s Oscar® contender at the Academy Awards® in March 2024.
Based on the nonfiction book Society of the Snow by journalist Pablo Vierci, the film tells the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile in 1972. Except the plane catastrophically crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes, and only 29 of the 45 passengers survive. Finding themselves stranded in one of the world’s most inaccessible and unforgiving environments on the planet, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.
Society of the Snow, a Netflix film, premieres globally on Thursday, January 4, 2024, exclusively on Netflix, following its theatrical release on December 15 in select cinemas. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
The cast includes Enzo Vogrincic (Yosi, the Regretful Spy), Matías Recalt (Apache: The Life of Carlos Tevez), Agustín Pardella (Secrets of Summer), Esteban Kukuriczka (Betibú), Esteban Bigliardi (The Delinquents), and Tomas Wolf.
Directed by multi-award winner J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible, A Monster Calls), the film is written by Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana (Pura), Jaime Marques (Valley of the Dead), and Nicolás Casariego (Intruders). It is produced by Belén Atienza, Sandra Hermida, and Bayona.
Filming of Society of the Snow took place in Sierra Nevada, Andalusia, Spain; Montevideo, Uruguay; and in different locations in the Andes in both in Chile and Argentina, including El Valle de las Lágrimas, the location of the plane crash.
