MUBI, the global streaming service, production company, and film distributor, has picked up The Kingdom (Riget) trilogy for audiences in North America, the UK, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, and India, among other territories.

The Kingdom Exodus (Riget Exodus), the highly-anticipated final part of the trilogy, was recently selected for the Out of Competition program at Venice Film Festival 2022.

Said Susan Wendt, Managing Director of TrustNordisk:

“We are excited to be working with MUBI on this grand project and having their platform as a new home for Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom series.”

The third and final season is heavily influenced by the supernatural series The Kingdom, the internationally-acclaimed 1990s cult classic created by Oscar® nominee Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves). In connection with the production of The Kingdom Exodus, both seasons of The Kingdom have been thoroughly restored, thus enabling the entire three-season, thirteen-episode series to be launched as a whole in the highest possible quality for both old and new fans.

The Kingdom is a ghost story about Rigshospitalet, aka Riget — a hospital built on top of the old bleaching ponds in Copenhagen — where evil has taken root, where medical science faces a daily struggle with itself, where the Swedes curse the Danes, and where the mysterious and inexplicable blend together in a mixture of horror and humor.

Lars von Trier completes the story with The Kingdom Exodus, in which sleepwalker Karen seeks answers to the unresolved questions of the series in order to save the hospital from doom. Sound asleep one night, she wanders into the darkness and inexplicably ends up in front of the hospital. The gate to the Kingdom is opening once more…

The final season features various characters from the earlier seasons of The Kingdom as well as new ones. The star-studded international cast includes Emmy® Award winner Lars Mikkelsen (Devils, The Witcher, Ride Upon the Storm), Mikael Persbrandt (Sex Education, The Hobbit, In a Better World), Nikolaj Lie Kaas (Riders of Justice), and Tuva Novotny (Blindspot), along with David Dencik (No Time to Die, Chernobyl) and Emmy® Award winner Alexander Skarsgård (Succession, Big Little Lies), both of whom will guest star in the series.

The Kingdom Exodus is written by Lars von Trier in collaboration with Niels Vørsel, with whom he penned the previous seasons. Louise Vesth is producing for Zentropa Entertainments, with NENT Group and DR as co-producers.

The series is presented by Viaplay and DR. It is produced by Zentropa Entertainments in co-production with Film i Väst, Zentropa Sweden, and Ginger Pictures, with support from Nordisk Film & TV Fond. It is co-produced with support from BNP Paribas Fortis Film Finance, and developed with the support of The Creative Europe Media Programme of the European Union. TrustNordosk is handling international sales.

The Kingdom Exodus will launch locally in Denmark in Fall 2022 on Viaplay, with its subsequent TV premiere on Danish broadcast service DR.

Stay tuned for updates about the US premiere on MUBI.
