Viaplay has set the North American premiere date for The Fortress, a Norwegian thriller series set in a dystopian near future. Check out the trailer.
The winner for Best Screenplay at Series Mania 2023, The Fortress (Festning Norge) puts current debates around migration policies and resource depletion at the heart of the action.
The seven-episode series features an all-star global cast led by Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story), Tobias Santelmann (Joe Nesbø’s Harry Hole, Exit), and Eili Harboe (Succession, The Architect).
Set in 2037, The Fortress sees a Norway that has severed all ties with the rest of the world. The decision to isolate, made by a Norwegian government led by members of the Our Way party, came after various crises had plagued countries across Europe (and the world) for years. Surrounded by an enormous wall, the nation has become entirely self-sufficient, and the fortunate inhabitants enjoy sheltered lives in a self-sustaining Nordic paradise.
Then there are those on the other side of the wall: the non-Norwegian people held in refugee camps, surrounded by barbed wire and armed soldiers.
When a deadly pandemic breaks out and affects Norway’s food supply, a government advisor states that the cause came “from the outside, of course.” But did it, really? In the meantime, the Norwegians soon realize that the wall meant to protect them is now holding them prisoner.
The Fortress, a Viaplay Series, premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, July 16, exclusively on Viaplay partner channels, including Viaplay on Prime Video Channels.
Costars in the series include Selome Emnetu (Occupied), Dominic Allburn (A Place to Call Home), Hallvard Holmen (Furia), Preben Hodneland (Witch Hunt), Rebekka Nystabakk (Twin), Alexandra Gjerpen (Norsemen), and Kingsford Siayor (Trapped), amongst others.
