She’s baack. That is, she’ll be back soon, she being former spy Kleo, as Season 2 of the hit German action thriller Kleo will be landing on Netflix in a couple of months.
With Kleo having made quite the splash with both critics and viewers across the globe when it premiered in August 2022, it’s no wonder the first season went on to win a bunch of awards, amongst them the Grimme-Preis in the Fiction category, and two German Television Awards for Best Drama Series and Best Actress (Jella Haase). Here in the US, the show was also nominated for a Critics Choice Award in the Best Foreign Language Series category.
The series stars Jella Haase (Dresden Detectives, The Team) as Kleo, who, in Season 1, was a top spy for the German Democratic Republic (GDR), aka East Germany, until she was betrayed, arrested, and thrown in prison for two years. Realizing that the conspiracy against her is quite complicated and that an ominous red suitcase is the key to it all, Kleo embarks on a revenge spree — all while West Berlin policeman Sven (Dimitrij Schaad, We Children from Bahnhof Zoo, Das Boot) is on her tail, chasing the case of a lifetime.
In Season 2, the hunt for the red suitcase continues. Kleo is determined to get it and destroy it for good, while Sven is doing all that he can to redeem himself in Kleo’s eyes and work with her again. For him, she’s the dose of adrenaline that he’s been missing in his work.
Because the contents of the red suitcase play a key role in the reorganization of Germany and Europe in the wake of the Cold War, it’s no wonder that the KGB and CIA are after it, too — and that Kleo becomes the target of both secret services.
While Europe’s future lies in Kleo’s hands, she uncovers more information about why she was sent to prison and learns more about her own past, plunging deeper into her past than she would like.
Kleo: Season 2, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, July 25, exclusively on Netflix. It will have its world premiere on June 6 at Seriencamp in Cologne.
The cast of the six-episode second season includes Julius Feldmeier (Das Boot), Vincent Redetzki (Tatort: Cologne), Andrej Kaminsky (John Wick: Chapter 4), Steffi Kühnert (The Same Sky), Marta Sroka (Wartime Girls), Alli Neumann (Jerks), Anna Stieblich (Leipzig Homicide), and Robin Gooch (Wir).
