The second season of German-Austrian crime drama Woman of the Dead has started filming. What’s in store for the undertaker Brünhilde Blum?
Based on the novel Woman of the Dead by Bernhard Aichner, the first title in his “Totenfrau” trilogy, crime drama series Woman of the Dead (Totenfrau) follows Brünhilde Blum (Anna Maria Mühe, Our Miracle Years, Bauhaus – A New Era, Tatort), an undertaker whose quest for vengeance upends her life.
In Season 1, Brünhilde lives with her husband and two young children in a popular ski resort, where she works as the undertaker at the funeral home she owns. As such, she deals with death on a daily basis. However, when it’s her husband who dies — killed in front of her, the victim of an apparent hit and run — Blum is shaken to her core… until she realizes that he was murdered and sets out to avenge his death. But soon after starting her pursuit of the murderers, Blum becomes increasingly cornered, forced to face her own harrowing past and turning from predator into prey.
Season 2 finds Blum’s past catching up with her. When parts of someone else’s body are discovered in the coffin of a deceased person, Blum is once again targeted by the police and arrested. During the interrogation, she is confronted with the news that her daughter, Nela (Emilia Pieske, Deutschland 86, Inventing Anna), has been kidnapped, and that securing Nela’s release requires handing over a video as the ransom — a video that Blum doesn’t even have. Forced to evade Inspector Wallner and the police, who are on her trail, Blum must also resist the manipulations of shady businessman Sarkissian. But then again, she’s willing to do anything to save Nela, so…
The cast of the six-episode second season includes Peter Kurth (Babylon Berlin), Britta Hammelstein (Tatort), Robert Palfrader (Walking on Sunshine), Michou Friesz (Pagan Peak), Yousef Sweid (Unorthodox), Gerhard Liebmann (Anatomy of Evil), Dominic Marcus Singer (Pagan Peak), Sabine Timoteo (The Gryphon), Lucas Gregorowicz (Pagan Peak), and Lilian Rosskopf.
Season 2 is directed by Daniel Prochaska (Tatort), and written by series creators Benito Mueller (Das Boot), Wolfgang Mueller (Das Boot), and Barbara Stepansky (Outlander), as well as Mike Majzen (Pagan Peak), Timo Lombeck (Vanessa), and Marcel Kawentel (The Scary House).
A co-production between Netflix and ORF, produced by Mona Film Streaming and Barry Films, the new season is being produced with support from FISA+, ABA, and Cine Tirol Film Commission. The producers are Thomas Hroch, Gerald Podgornig, Benito Mueller, and Wolfgang Mueller, with Jan Bennemann as Senior Producer. The ORF Editors are Andrea Bogad-Radatz and Nina Fehrmann-Trautz.
Stay tuned for updates.
