Or so she believes… until she receives a video suggesting he might not be dead. This prompts her to return to the island of Sarek, where she grew up and gave birth. Society of the Snow (La sociedad de la nieve) (Spain-US-Uruguay-Chile)

Based on the nonfiction book Society of the Snow by journalist Pablo Vierci, this historical drama tells the story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile in 1972. Except the plane catastrophically crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes, and only 29 of the 45 passengers survive. Finding themselves stranded in one of the world’s most inaccessible and unforgiving environments on the planet, they are forced to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Movie of the Week: Still Lives (Natures mortes) (France)

This Hitchcockian thriller follows Elsa (Virginie Théron, Sous le soileil), a young model who inadvertently takes someone else’s coat when leaving a new fashion designer’s casting call. After finding a roll of film in a pocket, she decides to develop the negatives — and discovers the photos show a woman being murdered. Once Upon a Time in Vigata (C’era una volta Vigata) (Italy)

This anthology series includes three standalone TV movie mysteries from the late, great Andrea Camilleri, the creator of Inspector Montalbano. (Note that the English titles shown below may be different when the episodes arrive on MHz Choice.)

Michele Riondino (The War is Over, The Lions of Sicily) stars in The Knight’s Move (La mossa del cavallo) as Giovanni Bovara, the Tax Ministry’s new chief mills inspector in 1877 Italy. Relocating from Genoa back to his hometown of Vigata in Sicily, Bovara investigates illegal mill-related activities while dealing with the differences between Genoan and Sicilian dialects and cultures. Through his inquiries, he discovers the existence of a clandestine mill and an ingenious tax-avoidance system — and then finds himself entangled in something much greater… and very dangerous.

Francesco Scianna (Mafia Only Kills in Summer, The Trial) stars in The Hunting Season (La stagione della caccia) as Alfonso Fofò La Matina, a pharmacist who opens a new pharmacy in 1880 Vigata. Shortly thereafter, strange events begin to occur, including several tragedies in a nobleman’s family.

Alessio Vassallo (The Young Montalbano, The Tailor’s Wife) stars in The Telephone Concession (La concessione del telefono) as Filippo “Pippo” Genuardi, a wood merchant in 1890s Vigata. After writing several letters to, but receiving no reply from, prefect Vittorio Marascianno (Corrado Guzzanti, Murders at Barlume) about the installation of a telephone line, the philandering Pippo resorts to a different tactic to get it, which ultimately puts him in a dangerous predicament with members of the mafia and of the police, as well as with his family.

Arctic Circle: Season 3 (Ivalo) (Finland)

Following on from the events in Season 2, the new season of this crime thriller finds Nina Kautsolo (Iina Kuustonen, Syke, Kimmo) back in the Lapland village of Ivalo, where she is soon to be the new chief of police. But before her promotion, Nina must put her investigative skills to work on a new case, alongside her old partner, Niilo Aikio (Janne Kataja, Hymyä!), after the local pharmacist is found murdered. At about the same time, a top-secret test car is hijacked, and the link between this crime and the homicide points Nina in the direction of the international car testing business in Ivalo. If she didn’t have enough on her plate already, criminal Arttu Hamari (Kari Hietalahti, Roba, Shadow Lines) is released from prison — and soon there’s another murder, also with connections to car testing.

While Nina continues her investigation into the crimes, she also gets more personally involved with an American engineer. Elsewhere in Ivalo, an auto manufacturer arrives to launch a new project; Hamari’s son is being bullied mercilessly; and Nina’s sister, Marita (Pihla Viitala, Deadwind, Cold Courage), is about to collapse under her construction project. Based on the novel Germinal by Émile Zola, considered one of the greatest French novels, this six-episode historical drama tells the story of the Anzin coal miners’ strike in northern France in the 1860s. The series also follows the personal story of Étienne Lantier (Louis Peres, How I Became a Super Hero), a (fictional) young worker disgusted by the poverty and exploitation of the coal miners.

Will (Wil) (Belgium)

While they support the resistance, they are forced to participate in the manhunt for Jews in their city.
