In a deal with international distributor Beta Film, MHz Choice has picked up the exclusive North American rights to the first four seasons of the must-see Italian series The Sea Beyond (Mare fuori), which will premiere in the US and Canada exclusively on MHz Choice.

The Sea Beyond follows Filippo (Nicolas Maupas, Nudes), a promising pianist from a wealthy family, and Carmine (Massimiliano Caiazzo, Filumena Marturano), scion of a crime family — a pair of young men whose resilience and loyalties are tested while serving time in a juvenile detention center on the Gulf of Naples.

Created by Cristiana Farina, who co-wrote the script with Maurizio Careddu, the series has become a television phenomenon in its home country of Italy, with millions of viewers tuning in each week and its youthful cast inspiring fervent fans.

Said Lance Schwulst, Senior Vice President, Content Strategy, MHz Networks:

The Sea Beyond is that rarest of television gems: a genuine phenomenon. We can’t wait to introduce North American viewers to this gritty and compelling Italian series on MHz Choice this Fall.”

Jeffrey Engelen, Beta Film’s International Sales Manager North America, commented:

“We are thrilled to have MHz Choice as the North American home for the captivating and record-breaking phenomenon The Sea Beyond. This partnership is certain to expand its fan base and garner the global audience appreciation the series truly deserves.”

Also included in the package with Beta Film are Season 3 of Makari – Sicilian Mysteries and the new series Camorra – Code of Honor, which joins MHz Choice’s existing top-tier catalog of Italian series, including RAI Classics Detective Montalbano, Imma Tatarani, and La Piovra (The Octopus).

The Sea Beyond will be a part of MHz Choice’s choice lineup of Italian series this fall. A few weeks ago, the streamer premiered the absorbing mystery-crime drama series Don’t Leave Me (Non mi lasciare), from the creators of the blockbuster series Gomorrah, and is following it up with the period drama limited series The Bride (La Sposa) next week.

While a premiere date for The Sea Beyond hasn’t been announced yet, dates have been set for two additional Italian series that will debut in North America on MHz Choice in the coming months.

Un Professore — premieres Tuesday, October 24

Based on the Spanish series Merlí created by Héctor Lozano, this contemporary drama stars Alessandro Gassmann (The Bastards of Pizzofalcone) as Dante Balestra, an unconventional and intriguing  philosophy professor who returns to Rome after many years away. Dante teaches a class at the Leonardo Da Vinci high school, where he applies his nonconformist teaching method and establishes a very special relationship with his students. However, the way in which he behaves soon causes confusion, as the mixing of his private and professional lives complicates things.
