Prime Video has announced the start of production in Italy on the Italian installment of “Citadel,” the new global spy series franchise from Prime Video and AGBO.
“Citadel” is the groundbreaking global-event series from Prime Video and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO. The as-yet-untitled Italian installment is the first local production within the “Citadel” franchise, and it stars Matilda De Angelis (Leonardo, The Undoing) in the lead role.
The cast of the Italian production includes Lorenzo Cervasio (Paradise), Maurizio Lombardi (The New Pope), Thekla Reuten (The Adulterer), Julia Piaton (Family Business), Filippo Nigro (Suburra: Blood on Rome), and Bernhard Schütz (Barbarians).
Directed by Arnaldo Catinari (Suburra: Blood on Rome), the new Italian-produced Original spy series is written by Alessandro Fabbri (1992, 1993, 1994), who is also the head writer, Ilaria Bernardini (In Treatment), Laura Colella (Breakfast with Curtis), Gianluca Bernardini (1994), and Giordana Mari (1993). Gina Gardini (Gomorrah, Suburra: Blood on Rome, ZeroZeroZero) is the showrunner of the series and serves as executive producer along with Riccardo Tozzi, Marco Chimenz, and Giovanni Stabilini for Cattleya (part of ITV Studios), the production company behind critically-acclaimed international hits, such as Gomorrah, ZeroZeroZero, and Suburra: Blood on Rome. Emanuele Savoini serves as co-executive producer.
The Italian production of the “Citadel” Original spy series will launch exclusively on Prime Video in over 240 countries and territories worldwide (date tba).
James Farrell, VP International, Amazon Studios, said:
“We are very excited that production is underway in Italy of the Italian instalment of the trailblazing Citadel universe. We are also proud to welcome Matilda De Angelis and the entire cast of this amazing project to Prime Video. Working alongside these talents and the Russo Brothers’ AGBO is truly thrilling.”
Nicole Morganti, head of Italian Originals, Amazon Studios, added:
“We are delighted to join forces with Cattleya and some of the most respected, productive and creative teams in Italy to raise the bar on our local productions with this exciting and ambitious production. We are thrilled for Italy to lead the charge as the first local Original in this visionary franchise from AGBO. The Italian Original series will be an epic television event, and we can’t wait to share it with our Prime Video audience in Italy and around the world.”
Angela Russo-Otstot, president of creative at AGBO and executive producer, stated:
“Amazon and the Citadel franchise have given AGBO a remarkable opportunity to collaborate with top talent from around the world, and Italy is no exception. As enormous fans of Cattleya, we have been afforded a front-row seat to their superior work and leadership, and it has been a thrill. Together with David Weil, we are humbled to be partnering with Gina, Alessandro, all the writers, and the stellar cast of this incredible series.”
And Riccardo Tozzi, founder and president of Cattley, commented:
“Citadel is an exceptionally ambitious and challenging project, and it is an honor to be part of it. The Italian series is a spy story with elements of action, adventure, and fantasy—the genre is simply unprecedented for Italy and for Cattleya. Yet, even with its own creative and stylistic uniqueness, it fits into the fascinating Citadel universe. We are happy to have set out on this journey with great partners in Amazon Studios and all the talent involved. Citadel is new energy for us and, we believe, for Italian series.”
The series is co-produced by Cattleya’s Riccardo Tozzi, Marco Chimenz, Giovanni Stabilini, Gina Gardini, and Amazon Studios, with AGBO’s Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca, Angela Russo-Ostot, Scott Nemes, and David Weil (Hunters) overseeing production on the Italian Original and all series within the global “Citadel” universe. Josh Applebaum, André Nemec, Jeff Pinkner, and Scott Rosenberg serve as executive producers for Midnight Radio on the untitled Italian Original and all series within the global Citadel universe.
The first-to-launch series within the Citadel universe stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), Richard Madden (Bodyguard), and Stanley Tucci (“The Hunger Games” saga). Additional local-language “Citadel” productions are also in the works, including a confirmed India Original series developed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. (The Family Man).
Stay tuned for updates.
