The Last Word (Das Letzte Wort), the new Netflix Original series from Germany, is a touching yet humorous dramedy about family, new beginnings, and dealing with death and grief.

The six-part series premieres worldwide on Thursday, September 17th, exclusively on Netflix. (You can add a reminder for it now.)

Death is a bleak matter, but funerals don’t have to be.

After 25 years of marriage, the sudden death of her husband causes Karla Fazius’s (Anke Engelke, Deutschland 86, Detective Ellen Lucas) world to fall apart. Unexpectedly, and to the surprise of her family, she finds a new purpose on the day of his funeral: to be a eulogist.

Together with funeral home director Andreas Borowski (Thorsten Merten, Babylon Berlin, Tatort), Karla assists those dealing with loss and accompanies them on their individual paths to bid their final farewell — all while breaking every rule in the funeral business, much to Andreas’s dismay.

At the same time, Karla is on her own journey to regain a love for life. But she finds it difficult to overcome her own loss and thus contributes to the ever-increasing chaos in her family.

Based on an idea by Thorsten Merten, the series is written by Aron Lehmann and Carlos V. Irmscher, the showrunners, and directed by Aron Lehmann and Pola Beck. The executive producers are Daniel Sonnabend and Dan Maag for Pantaleon Films GmbH.

Other cast members include Nina Gummich (Beat), Johannes Zeiler (World on Fire), Aaron Hilmer (The Wall), Claudia Geisler-Bading (The Weissensee Saga), Gudrun Ritter (Beat), and Juri Winkler (Tatort).
