Czech espionage thriller The Sleepers is the latest drama miniseries from HBO Europe that will premiere in the US on HBO streaming channels.
One of six global shows selected as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s 2019 Prime Time Section, where it had its North American debut, The Sleepers (known as Bez vědomí in the Czech Republic) is set to launch in the States.
The Sleepers premieres in the US on Monday, May 18, on HBO Go, HBO Now, and partners’ streaming platforms, including HBO on Amazon Channels. It will also be available on HBO via HBO Max when the new streaming bundle launches on May 27.
Set at the end of 1989, The Sleepers follows an ordinary woman who, in the midst of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, gets caught between the two worlds of State Security and the dissidents, and is forced to uncover unexpected secrets kept by both.
The six-part story opens in October 1989 in London, where married couple Marie (Tatiana Pauhofova, Anatomy of a Murder, Burning Bush) and Viktor (Martin Mysicka, Anatomy of a Murder, The Mine Inferno), who defected from Czechoslovakia under dramatic circumstances 12 years ago, are on their way to Prague. Marie, a professional violinist, longs to see her family again, but Viktor’s motives are less clear.
Both anticipate that after the political turmoil in East Germany, Hungary and Poland, the winds of change will soon sweep across Czechoslovakia as well. But it doesn’t take long for them to realize that that time hasn’t yet arrived. After an unexpected turn of events, Marie lies unconscious in a hospital, and Viktor has disappeared without a trace. Worried and distressed, she ends up alone, in a country she doesn’t understand anymore and which doesn’t understand her.
The cast of The Sleepers includes Hattie Morahan (My Mother and Other Strangers, The Bletchley Circle), David Nykl (Arrow, Stargate: Atlantis), Martin Hofmann (Red Line), and Lenka Vlasakova (The Invisibles).
