A new Norwegian series is headed to both sides of the pond and Down Under, thanks to on-demand streaming service Walter Presents. It is The River.
Based on actual events, The River (Elven) follows Thomas Lønnhøiden (Espen Reboli Bjerke, Mammon, The Heavy Water War/The Saboteurs, Eyewitness), a cop and an outsider who encounters much resistance in his investigation of a young girl who mysteriously vanishes.
Her disappearance follows her discovery of a severed hand in the river behind her home in the small village of Djupelv, located in northern Norway near the Russian border. Those battling against Lønnhøiden and obstructing his investigation are none other than the residents of the tight-knit community in Djupelv, who are adamant about keeping the truth about their past a secret.
Despite warnings from them and members of the military, Lønnhøiden continues to dig for the truth in what becomes a murder investigation.
Said Walter Iuzzolino, co-founder and curator of Walter Presents, about the series:
“The River is an outstanding new Nordic series—dark, elegant and utterly compelling and its setting on the border between Norway and Russia brings a powerful and unusual narrative edge to the story. This is an A-list piece which takes the Scandi genre to a new height, and we are delighted to have secured it across all of Walter Presents’ English-speaking territories: U.K., U.S. and Australia.”
A production of Arctic Wonder for TV3 in Norway, the eight-episode The River costars Ingebord Raustøl (Maniac).
Walter Presents just acquired The River and has not announced the premiere date for the series for any of its territories, so stay tuned for updates.
