Spiral, a Best Drama nominee at the 2011 International Emmy® Awards, returns to BBC Four with twelve new intense and gripping episodes.

In the Series 5 opener, Laure Berthaud (Caroline Proust, The Tunnel) gets an unexpected pieces of news that complicates her messy life even further. It also threatens her fragile emotional state, as coping with Sami’s death (in the Season 4 finale) has already been a challenge. But dealing with it will have to wait, since she, Gilou Escoffier (Thierry Godard, Un Village Français) and Tintin Fromentin (Fred Bianconi, L’épervier) have a new case: the murders of a woman and young girl, whose bodies are being fished out of the Ourcq Canal when she arrives on the scene.

Spiral Season 5 UK DVDLater Laure gets another surprise: Pierre Clément (Grégory Fitoussi, Mr. Selfridge) is the defense attorney for the prime suspect in the murder case, and Judge François Roban (Philippe Duclos, Inquisitio) is outraged that his friend and colleague is representing a man he believes is guilty. And in an interesting turn of events, Roban and Joséphine Karlsson (Audrey Fleurot, The Intouchables) become partners of sorts in the case of an alleged cop killer that could involve police manipulation of evidence.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Herville (Nicolas Briançon, Maison Close) must prove to the powers that be that his team is an effective one. However, nabbing the killer in the double homicide case is proving difficult. To make matters worse, the cops also have a team of bank robbers, a gang of street muggers, and a network of gold smugglers to catch.

For Joséphine, her work on the case against corrupt officers brings her face to face with (another) amoral attorney, Eric Edelman (Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Polisse), who is defending the police department’s interests. And for Pierre, life takes a dramatic turn after his election to the Bar Council.

Other cast members reprising their roles for the fifth series of Spiral include Bruno Debrandt (Caïn) as Commissaire Brémont, Dominique Daguier (The Intouchables) as Procureur Machard, and Elisabeth Macocco (Nicolas Le Floch) as Marianne Ledoux.

Spiral: Series 5 premieres tomorrow, 10 January 2015, at 9 PM GMT, on BBC Four. (Fingers crossed that the new season arrives in the US soon.)
