This true-crime documentary tells the story of Isabel Fuentes, the victim of alleged burglars who left her on the brink of death in her own home in Pazos, a suburb of Verín in Ourense, Galicia, Spain, in April 2015. From the start, the Guardia Civil sergeant in charge of the case suspected that the account of what had happened didn’t add up and tried to protect Isabel from further attack. But thirty-seven days later, Isabel was murdered in the hospital room where she was recovering.

Featuring testimonies from investigators, doctors, family members, neighbors, and journalists, the film seeks to understand how this could have happened and why the system failed to protect her. Das Boot: Season 3 (Germany)

Premiering for the first time in the US, the third season of this internationally-renowned drama series follows on from the events in the first two and tracks three storylines: It is spring 1943 when Robert Ehrenberg (Franz Dinda, Babylon Berlin, Tatort: Munich) sails out once again on an impossible mission with a very young and inexperienced commanding officer and crew. Hunted by the revengeful British Commander Swinburne (Ray Stevenson, Ahsoka, Vikings), it is imperative that the crew of U-949 have more than one ace up their collective sleeve to defy death.

Meanwhile, Hagen Forster (Tom Wlaschiha, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things) has been assigned a mission in Lisbon, during which he meets Klaus Hoffmann (Rick Okon, Love Sucks, X Company). The latter is unofficially helping the US Navy to establish a connection to the Reich’s Navy via his father, Wilhelm Hoffmann (Ernst Stötzner, Babylon Berlin, Tatort: Harbor Crimes), to end this War. And in Kiel, Wilhelm’s daughter, Hannie (Luise Wolfram, Tatort, Charité), is stuck in a loveless marriage, the boundaries of her status, and a dangerous regime, and ends up playing with fire.

Icebreaker (Jään vangit) (Finland)

Jessica Grabowsky (Thicker Than Water, Shadow Lines, Top Dog) stars in this Arctic noir mystery-crime thriller as Coast Guard officer Sanna Tanner, a leader of a rescue mission for a Finnish icebreaker trapped in the northernmost part the Baltic Sea during a winter storm. What she and the rescue team find after boarding it are a group of survivors and something gruesome: a frozen body tied to an air vent. Another death follows, except it’s that of a rescue team member, which leaves Sanna Tanner leading the mission on her own. While waiting out the storm, she tries to find out what happened on this special-purpose ship by questioning the crew, but they are reticent, as if hiding something.

Then things get downright eerie. Over the next six days (during the week of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year), crew members start acting strangely. They also start disappearing, one by one. It seems like an old folktale about spirits lost at sea has come to life, and said spirits have returned to seek vengeance. Sanna must solve this seemingly supernatural mystery quickly… lest she become the next victim.

Costars in the six-episode series include Mikko Leppilampi (Freezing Embrace), Eero Milonoff (Port Poison – Santeri’s Deal), Roderick Kabanga (Dance Brothers), Seidi Haarla (Port Poison – Santeri’s Deal), and Riitta Havukainen (The Paradise), amongst others.

ChiaroScuro (Italy)

Reminiscent of the French TV series The Art of Crime, this Rome-set mystery-crime drama opens with the discovery of the dead body of the National Gallery’s director, murdered and laid out on the floor like the corpse depicted by Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi in a famous painting. Investigating the creepy crime are Inspector Angelo Tiberi (Andrea Lattanzi, The Turning Point, Summertime) and art consultant Cosmo Speranza (Pierpaolo Spollon, La Porta Rossa, The Good Apprentice).

Angelo, a straightforward and authentic working class guy, surrounded by friends and family, couldn’t be more different from the sophisticated Cosmo, who is lonely and inconsistent. But this homicide case forces them to cooperate. And as this murder will be just the first in a series, they will discover that their differences actually make their partnership effective.

Costarring Aurora Giovinazzo (My Family, Nuovo Olimpo) and Romana Maggiora Vergano (Portobello, Christian), ChiaroScuro, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Wednesday, November 11, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)

The guilt of having lost thousands of young men on the battlefield weighs heavily on him. Empress Elisabeth (Devrim Lingnau Islamoğlu, Allmen, Under Suspicion) tries to stand by him, fighting passionately for her marriage while at the same time advocating for what would now be right for the empire, but in vain. While Franz’s infidelity further shakes their marriage, resistance at court and her own health force Elisabeth to leave Vienna for a distant island to recover.

By chance, the Empress meets Count Andrássy (Dejan Bućin, Hijack, Baptiste), the leader of the Hungarian revolution, on her journey. Their encounter is immediately marked by strong intellectual and physical attraction. Almost simultaneously, Franz’s brother, Maximilian (Johannes Nussbaum, Shades of Guilt, Tatort), sets off on a great adventure with his wife, Marie (Josephine Thiesen, The Trap, Two Sides of the Abyss), as he is to ascend the imperial throne in far-off Mexico. Clangold (Germany)

This true-crime docuseries explores one of the most high-profile heists in modern European history: the theft of the 100-kilogram (220-pound) solid gold “Big Maple Leaf” coin, and the elaborate investigation that followed. In March 2017, thieves used a ladder to break through a second-story window of the Bode Museum in Berlin, used a wheelbarrow to haul away the massive gold coin, valued at over $4 million, and escaped via nearby railway tracks. Maniacs of the Truth (Az igazság mániákusai) (Hungary)

This program, HBO’s first Hungarian Original true-crime docuseries, brings together veteran police detectives to revisit some of the country’s most notorious criminal cases, focusing on major investigations from the turbulent final years of state socialism in Hungary through the post-1989 political transition. These include the high-profile 1991 kidnapping of 18-year-old Helga Farkas and the string of murders connected to hitman Magda Marinko during the 1990s, both of which deeply shaped Hungary’s collective memory during a period of rapid social change and rising organized crime. The series also explores the psychological toll on investigators, from how the truth is established, to what lingers after a case is officially closed, to how unresolved cases haunt the detectives who worked them.

Maniacs of the Truth, an HBO Original, premieres globally on Friday, November 13, exclusively on HBO Max and its digital channels, including HBO Max on Prime Video.
