If it’s shows from Finland you want, MHz Choice is the best place for them in North America. And soon, they will be bringing us another one: the thriller series, Icebreaker.

There’s Nordic noir and then there’s Arctic noir, in which the polar setting and climate, bleak atmosphere, and isolation and survival elements combine for some intense storylines. Think Arctic Circle, Fortitude (before it jumped the shark in Season 3), Trapped (especially Season 1), The Head (ditto), even the first season of The Terror (historical horror story notwithstanding).

So, I have high hopes for the next Arctic Noir series coming to North America: Icebreaker (aka Jään vangit), starring Jessica Grabowsky (Thicker Than Water, Shadow Lines, Top Dog).

The series is set aboard a Finnish icebreaker, trapped in the Gulf of Bothnia, the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea, during a winter storm. A rescue mission is launched, and the team finds a group of survivors and something gruesome: a frozen body tied to an air vent. Another death follows, except it’s that of a rescue team member, which leaves Coast Guard officer Sanna Tanner (Grabowsky) leading the mission on her own. While waiting out the storm, she tries to find out what happened on this special-purpose ship by questioning the crew, but they are reticent, as if hiding something.

Then things get downright eerie. Over the next six days (during the week of the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year), crew members start acting strangely. They also start disappearing, one by one. It seems like an old folktale about spirits lost at sea has come to life, and said spirits have returned to seek vengeance. Sanna must solve this seemingly supernatural mystery quickly… lest she become the next victim.

Costars in the six-episode series include Mikko Leppilampi (Freezing Embrace), Eero Milonoff (Port Poison – Santeri’s Deal), Roderick Kabanga (Dance Brothers), Seidi Haarla (Port Poison – Santeri’s Deal), and Riitta Havukainen (The Paradise), amongst others.

Icebreaker premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, November 10, exclusively on MHz Choice (add it to your watchlist here) and its digital channels, including MHz Choice on Prime Video (add it to your watchlist here).
