The biopic drama limited series, Cristóbal Balenciaga, has premiered in the US.
As with the series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld and The New Look, Cristóbal Balenciaga is a biopic drama about a renowned fashion designer, in this case the titular Spanish one, played here by Alberto San Juan (Crazy About Her).
The series chronicles the life of Balenciaga, focusing on his journey from his humble beginnings in Guetaria to becoming a pivotal figure in haute couture. It opens in 1937, when Balenciaga, already a success in his native Spain, presents his first haute couture collection in Paris but fails to hit the mark; his unique designs aren’t in sync with the sophisticated looks that have made the City of Light a capital of high fashion, where the designs of Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy have set the benchmark for haute couture.
So, Balenciaga, guided by his obsession with perfection and control in all aspects of his life, begins to define his style and becomes one of the most important designers of all time.
Cristóbal Balenciaga premiered in the US today, Wednesday, January 15, exclusively on Hulu.
Amongst the cast of the six-episode drama are Gemma Whelan (Game of Thrones) as Prudence Glynn, British fashion journalist for The Times; Thomas Coumans (Transfers) as Wladzio D’Attainville, Balenciaga’s partner; Anouk Grinberg (Captain Marleau) as fashion designer Coco Chanel; Gabrielle Lazure (Mystery of Manon) as Carmel Snow, fashion director of Harper’s Bazaar; Adrien Dewitte (L’Opéra) as fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy; Francis Leplay (Furies) as couturier Lucien LeLong; Patrice Thibaud (Captain Marleau) as fashion designer Christian Dior; and Anna-Victoire Olivier (Spiral) as actress Audrey Hepburn.
