Great news, Euro TV fans! The hit Norwegian war drama, The Heavy Water War, will be coming to MHz Networks in the US and Channel 4 in the UK.
Set during World War II, The Heavy Water War (Kampen om Tungtvannet) centers on Germany’s secret nuclear project and the Allies’ efforts to prevent Hitler from developing the atomic bomb.
Woven through the six-part drama are three storylines: the quest by ambitious German scientist Werner Heisenberg to get his hands on heavy water in order to produce a nuclear bomb for Hitler; the sabotage missions undertaken by Leif Tronstad and Norwegian and British soldiers, who risked their lives to prevent Hitler from having an atomic bomb; and the dilemmas faced by Erik Henriksen, the Managing Director of Norsk Hydro’s Vemork factory, the sole producer of heavy water, that is being occupied by the Germans.
The Heavy Water War stars double-award winner Christoph Bach (Tatort) as German Nobel laureate in Physics, Werner Heisenberg; award-winner Espen Klouman Høiner (Mammon) as Leif Tronstad, the Norwegian scientist who helped build the Vemork heavy water production plant before fleeing to England and becoming a crucial member of the Nazi resistance; and Dennis Storhøi (Mammon) as the fictitious Erik Henriksen.
From the UK, Golden Globes nominee® Anna Friel (Pushing Daisies) plays an English captain, and Pip Torrens (Poldark) plays a British intelligence officer.
Also featuring in the series are Søren Pilmark (The Killing) as Danish physicist Niels Bohr, Christian Rubeck (Varg Veum), Maibritt Saerens (The Legacy), Frank Kjosås (The Half Brother), Rolf Kristian Larsen (Max Manus: Man of War), Stein Winge (Norwegian Cozy), David Zimmerschied (Generation War), and Uwe Preuss (Bukow and König).
(The story of the factory’s sabotage was previously dramatized in The Heroes of Telemark, the 1965 feature film starring Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris.)
Written by Petter Rosenlund (Codename Hunter) and directed by Per-Olav Sørensen (The Half Brother), the multi-language (Norwegian, English, German, and Danish) The Heavy Water War is a co-production of Norway’s Filmkameratene and NRK, Denmark’s Sebasto Film, the UK’s Headline Pictures, and Sweden’s SF Film.
A hit in its native Norway, The Heavy Water War delivered more than 1.2 million viewers when it aired on NRK1 in January.
Channel 4 will screen The Heavy Water War later this year on More4. Stay tuned for details about when MHz Networks will premiere the series to US viewers.
