MHz Choice announced today the North American premiere date for the last-ever installment of Detective Montalbano. Check out the teaser! (Cue big, ugly cry.)
I’m feeling a bit like how I felt when the last-ever episode of Beck to feature Mikael Persbrandt loomed large on the Euro TV horizon. For 31 episodes of the Swedish crime drama, Persbrandt’s nattily-dressed, dark-humored, tough-guy cop, Gunvald Larsson, played an outsized role in my Euro TV viewing experience. Then he was gone.
In roughly three weeks, we will have to bid a fond, final arrivederci to Luca Zingaretti and his beloved signature role of Salvo Montalbano — along with everyone and everything else we’ve come to know and love in Detective Montalbano — as the long-running Italian mystery series (which began in 1999) comes to an end with its 37th episode.
From the intricate storylines, interesting characters, and lovely locations in Sicily, to Montalbano’s “Avanti, avanti,” delizioso meals, and close relationships with his longtime colleagues and girlfriend, Detective Montalbano scratched our cozy mystery itch and kicked up our travel bug with every episode. It’s sad that there will be no more of this coming after July 6. (Sigh.)
Joining Zingaretti for one last hurrah are series regulars Cesare Bocci as Mimi, Peppino Mazzotta as Fazio, and Angelo Russo as Catarella, as well as Sonia Bergamasco as Livia.
Based on The Sicilian Method, the 26th “Inspector Montalbano Mystery” novel by the late, great Andrea Camilleri, the feature-length “The Catalanotti Method” (which is directed by Zingaretti, following the death of longtime Montalbano director Alberto Sironi) finds Montalbano and his team investigating the stabbing murder of a local man, the founder of the amateur theater company in Vigàta. What they learn is that the victim had more going on than just acts in the realm of the performing arts. In other goings-on, Mimi haps upon a dead body while escaping notice by his mistress’s husband, and Salvo and co. have a new female colleague (played by Greta Scarano, The Vertical Line, Anti-Mafia Squad)…
Detective Montalbano: The Catalanotti Method premieres in the US and Canada on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, exclusively on MHz Choice and its digital channels, including MHz Choice on Amazon Channels.
