MHz Choice announced today its acquisition of North American rights to Reykjavík Fusion, a brand-new Icelandic crime thriller series starring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
MHz Choice picked up Reykjavík Fusion from Wild Sheep Content, whose Founder and CEO, Erik Barmack, described the series as “‘Breaking Bad’ meets ‘The Bear’.”
That’s seriously high praise. No wonder the six-episode limited series did gangbusters when it premiered in Iceland. Since it launched on Icelandic streaming service Sjónvarp Símans Premium, Reykjavík Fusion has become a national phenomenon, with the first episode alone garnering viewership figures (64,000+ plays, ~ 140,000 viewers) that equate to roughly 36% of the country’s entire population.
Set in the culinary world, Reykjavík Fusion stars Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance, Somebody Somewhere, Trapped) as Jónas, a talented chef working to rebuild his life after he was wrongly imprisoned. As society turns its back on the ex-convict, his last resort is to commit his first crime. By accepting dirty money to set up a fine-dining restaurant, Jónas is forced to run a money-laundering operation to pay it back — a situation that jeopardizes everything in his life, from his parole to the lives of himself and the people he loves.
The cast includes Hera Hilmar (See), Lára Jóhanna Jónsdóttir (Black Sands), Unnur Birna Jónsdóttir Backman (The Lava Field), Iðunn Ösp Hlynsdóttir (Foundation), Guðjón Davíð Karlsson (Trapped), and Þröstur Leó Gunnarsson (The Cliff), amongst others.

Executive produced by Ólafsson, the series is the first project produced under his production banner, Act4, and comes from Act4 co-founder and creator/writer Hörður Rúnarsson (Fractures), along with co-creator/writer Birkir Blær Ingólfsson (The Minister), writer Jónas Margeir Ingólfsson (The Minister), and directors Gunnar Páll Ólafsson and Samúel Bjarki Pétursson. Reykjavík Fusion was the first Icelandic series selected at CanneSeries, where it premiered in 2024.
