Hailed as the “Norwegian Mad Men,” State of Happiness (original title: Lykkeland), the winner of 14 international awards, returns soon to North America with its third and final season.
Opening in 1969 with the birth of Norway’s oil industry in Season 1, followed by the industrial disasters in 1977 and 1980 in Season 2, the third season of State of Happiness is set in the late ’80s, a time of big shoulder pads and even bigger hair. The oil industry in Norway has undergone many changes over the past seven years, with new start-ups having popped up and people being replaced by machines.
Anna (Anne Regine Ellingsæter), now a widowed mother and tech millionaire, wants more challenges, so she leaves her secure position at the Oil Directorate to join a start-up called Komponent, led by the charismatic engineer, Sture (Herman Flesvig, Beforeigners). Her brother, Rein (Ole Christoffer Ertvaag, Home for Christmas), an offshore worker who’s spiraling into radicalization, joins her in the venture. But financial struggles lead to tension between the siblings, when Rein suggests selling their family farm to fund the company.
Meanwhile, the glittering life of multi-restaurant operator Toril (Malene Wadel) begins to shatter under the weight of her addiction to alcohol and drugs. And her husband, Christian (Paal Herman Ims, Troll), heir to the Nymans’ diving company, is forced to confront the deadly cost of his family’s success.
