Moment of Fear (Fryktens øyeblikk) (Norway)

This five-part docuseries examines dramatic events and talks to people who have each been exposed to a strong fear and survived. Some of these events are the result of a calculated risk; others are about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Through contemporary interviews, archive material, and reconstructions, we get close to these stories and go deeper into the very moment of fear. Moment of Fear, a Viaplay Documentary, premieres in the US on Thursday, February 6, exclusively on Viaplay on Prime Video Channels, as well as other Viaplay partner channels.

How I Left the Opus Dei (El Minuto Heroico: Yo También Dejé El Opus Dei) (Spain)

In this docuseries, thirteen women give first-hand testimony about their life in Opus Dei, a secular institution of the Catholic Church, and their subsequent break from it. These women — of various ages, from diverse backgrounds and different parts of Spain, Latin America, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, and without any ties between them — recount their personal experiences of serving as Opus Dei numeraries, auxiliary numeraries, or associates, and describe their sense of being subjected to psychological and spiritual abuse within the institution.

The program incorporates a historical, cultural, and social framework that allows us to understand the circumstances in which these women lived and made their decisions. They tell of their adolescences, when they were directed to join Opus Dei and give themselves body and soul to the service of the Work, as well as their subsequent departure and total break from the organization. Actress Claudia Traisac (See You in Another Life, The Patients of Dr. García, Unauthorized Living) gives a face and voice to the women’s stories in fictional recreations based on their experiences.

Also featuring comments from journalists, psychologists, lawyers, and other experts, who provide context on both Opus Dei and the life experiences shared by the women, this documentary series is the first one to address the issue of Opus Dei and its coercive dynamics, not just with extensive research but also with multiple cases and corroborating versions, as well as an unprecedented point of view — that of the thirteen women.

How I Left the Opus Dei, a Max Original Documentary Series, premieres in the US, Latin America, and Europe on Friday, February 7, exclusively on Max, as well as its digital channels, including Max on Prime Channels, where available.

Wrong Side of the Tracks: Season 4 (Entrevías) (Spain)

Wrong Side of the Tracks: Season 4, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Friday, February 7, exclusively on Netflix.

In what we see of her life prior to this, Victoria works for the National Crime Service, investigating different cases with her team, including Ayla (Iselin Shumba Skjævesland, Ragnarok) and Kit (Ingar Helge Gimle, Acquitted), and interacting with her family, including her son and her love interest. The mystery around why she ended up in jail slowly unfolds.

Consent (Après le silence) (France)

This drama follows Marina (Caroline Anglade, Saving Lisa), a woman whose life takes a transformative turn when she walks into a police station to report a crime that has haunted her for years: the repeated rapes by her ex-partner, Gregory Pasteur (Clovis Cornillac, Chefs), until she decided to flee, taking their young son with her. The act of filing a complaint is just the beginning of her battle, as Marina confronts her own fears and vulnerabilities and a deeply-flawed legal system, one in which proving marital rape is nearly impossible.

While Gregory’s calm denial paints him as a doting father and wronged man, the cracks in his facade begin to show as Marina digs deeper, exposing him as a master manipulator and unearthing chilling patterns of coercion and abuse. As Marina’s accusations ripple through her community, Samia (Samira Lachhab, Leo Mattei – Special Unit), one of Gregory’s ex-girlfriends, becomes a powerful ally as Marina’s determination inspires her to break her silence. Also joining them is Chloe (Alice David, Spin), Gregory’s current partner, whose initial skepticism leads to a devastating realization. Together, their solidarity and shared truth shed light on a predator who thrived on isolation and secrecy, transforming Marina’s personal quest for justice into a collective reckoning.

Consent has its US linear debut on Sunday, February 23, at 9pm ET, on Eurochannel. (Folks who don’t have access to Eurochannel can stream the movie.)

Unspoken (Nemá tajemství) (Czech Republic)

This mystery drama revolves around Martin (Marian Mitas, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), a brilliant veterinarian whose life unravels after a devastating accident, a kick to the head from a horse, leaves him unable to speak or connect with the world. Surrounding him are the women who know him best: his wife, Erika (Jana Plodková, Hello, Welcome), now burdened with the strain of caring for a man who was once her equal; his mother, Dana (Milena Steinmasslová, Podezrení), whose maternal instincts clash with the stark reality of Martin’s condition; and his colleague, Jana (Magdaléna Borová, The End of the World), the catalyst for the tragedy, as it was her horse that set everything into motion.

Then Martin is found dead, his mysterious demise prompting a police investigation. Each of the women offers a differing account of Martin’s final days, and as the case continues, the detectives unearth more than anyone anticipated.

Unspoken has its US linear debut on Friday, February 28, at 9pm ET, on Eurochannel. (Folks who don’t have access to Eurochannel can stream the movie.)

Spring Tide: Season 1 (Springfloden) (Sweden)

Adapted from Spring Tide, the best-selling novel by the husband-and-wife writing team of Rolf and Cilla Börjlind (Arne Dahl, Beck), the first season of this mystery-crime thriller series follows Police Academy student Olivia Rönning (Julia Ragnarsson, End of Summer, Blinded) as she delves into a quarter-century-old cold case involving a pregnant woman buried alive on a beach on Sweden’s North Koster Island. She’s working on the case for a class assignment, but when she discovers a personal connection to the 1990 investigation, she begins her own unofficial inquiry into the tragedy.

The one person who could help Olivia is Tom Stilton (Kjell Bergqvist, Bäckström, 30 Degrees in February), the former lead investigator on the case. But finding him is going to be tricky; Tom has been living rough on the streets for years. Plus he’s been making himself scarce, so as not to be another victim in the series of vicious assaults on homeless people in Stockholm. Tom knows some of the ones who have been attacked, and since the police seem to be lackadaisical about finding the culprits, he decides to take the matter into his own hands — just like Olivia is doing with the beach case… until she and Tom finally do team up.

The ten-part series features Helena Bergström (Missing), Johan Widerberg (The Sandhamn Murders), Cecilia Nilsson (Snow Angels), Peter Carlberg (Young Royals), Dag Malmberg (The Bridge), Kjell Wilhelmsen (Blue Eyes), Görel Crona (Love Me), and Dar Salim (Tatort: Harbor Crimes).

Spring Tide: Season 1 returns to streaming in the US and Canada on Tuesday, February 11, on MHz Choice and its digital channels, including MHz Choice on Prime Channels.
