Netflix announced today The Åre Murders, a new Nordic noir mystery-crime drama series from Sweden, based on crime novels by Viveca Sten.
Best-selling Swedish author Viveca Sten, whose popular “Sandhamn Murders” novels have been adapted into the long-running, fan-favorite Scandi noir mystery series of the same name, has a new television series based on her works: The Åre Murders (Åremorden), based on books in her “The Åre Murders” crime novel series.
Set in the beautiful town of Åre in Sweden, known for its stunning landscapes, The Åre Murders is adapted from the first two of five titles (to date) in the book series: Hidden in Snow and Hidden in Shadows.
The filmed series follows police officer Hanna Ahlander, who moves to her sister’s vacation home in Åre after being suspended from her job in Stockholm and dumped by her partner. When a young woman goes missing on the icy, frigid night of the annual Lucia celebration, Hanna can’t help but start investigating the case. With a tough family situation and an understaffed police station, local police officer Daniel Lindskog reluctantly accepts Hanna’s help. The mystery of the disappearance is one thing; whether Hanna and Daniel can trust each other is another.
The Åre Murders, a Netflix Series, premieres globally on Thursday, February 6, 2025, exclusively on Netflix. (You can set a reminder for it now.)
The main cast includes Carla Sehn (Love & Anarchy), Kardo Razzazi (Top Dog), Charlie Gustafsson (The Restaurant), Francisco Sobrado (Bäckström), Amalia Holm (Vikings: Valhalla), Frida Argento (Young Royals), Agnes Kittelsen (Exit), Jon Øigarden (Mammon), Robin Stegmar (Spring Tide), Olle Sarri (Snabba Cash), Samuel Astor (Young Royals), and Moa Gammel (Jordskott).
A production of SF Studios, the series is directed by Joakim Eliasson (Gåsmamman) and Alain Darborg (Alex), and written by Karin Gidfors (The Lawyer) and Jimmy Lindgren (Murder in Sweden). The producer is Brita H Lundqvist (Borg vs. McEnroe), and the executive producers are Tim King, Susann Billberg-Rydholm, and Viveca Sten.
