North American streaming service MHz Choice announced today its acquisition and US premiere date of two Miss Merkel tongue-in-cheek mystery movies from Germany.
This sounds like fun!
Based on the “Miss Merkel” books by writer, humorist, and actor David Safier (Berlin, Berlin), the “Miss Merkel” films are high-concept mystery stories with a fresh and funny twist.
The feature-length films star veteran German actress Katharina Thalbach (The Tin Drum, Sophie’s Choice, Kafka) as Angela Merkel, the former German chancellor. Having left politics behind and now bored in retirement, Miss Merkel moves to the lovely hills of the small town of Uckermark with her husband, Joachim Sauer (Thorsten Merten, Babylon Berlin, The Gryphon), and her pug, Helmut (as in former federal chancellor Helmut Kohl). When she finds a dead body, she transforms into a Miss Marple version of herself, discovering a new calling as an amateur detective.
MHz Choice has acquired two of the 90-minute “Miss Merkel” films, slated to premiere in the US (but not Canada) exclusively on the streaming service on Tuesday, October 22.
Said Lance Schwulst, Executive Vice President of Content Strategy, MHz Choice:
“I committed to this series before my sales agent had finished her pitch. It’s such an idiosyncratic premise that I knew it had to be right. Miss Merkel will be another comedic gem from Germany on MHz Choice and I’m delighted that a third episode is planned.”
The TV adaptations were written by Safier and Stefan Cantz (Tatort, Nord Nord Nord) and directed by Christoph Schnee (Homicide Hills, Tatort).
