Netflix has announced Amsterdam Empire, a new crime drama series from the Netherlands starring Famke Janssen.
Created by the team of Nico Moolenaar, Bart Uytdenhouwen, Piet Matthys, the creative minds behind the hit Netflix series Undercover and Ferry: The Series, Amsterdam Empire is a crime drama full of glamour and grime at the heart of the Amsterdam cannabis scene.
Leading the cast of the new seven-part Netflix Dutch Original series is Famke Janssen (“X-Men” films, GoldenEye, Hemlock Grove, How to Get Away with Murder), who also executive produces alongside Nico Moolenaar. The announced cast also includes Isabelle Adjani (Camille Claudel, Queen Margot).
In Amsterdam Empire, Jack van Doorn, the rich and notorious founder of the coffee shop empire Jackal, has had to fight his entire career against criminals, competitors, and absurd Dutch laws to become the biggest of them all. When his affair with a well-known journalist comes to light, it turns out that his most dangerous enemy has been living under his roof all this time: his betrayed wife, Betty (Famke Janssen), an ex-pop diva who knows all of his weak spots and secrets, and will not rest until she has taken everything from him.
A production of Amsterdam-based Pupkin, co-produced by A Team Productions, the series is directed by Jonas Govaerts (Tabula Rasa) and produced by Sander van Meurs (Ares).
Amsterdam Empire is slated for release in 2025 (date tba). (You can set a reminder for it now.)
