HBO announced today that 30 Coins, the seriously creepy Spanish horror drama series, is returning for a second season.
Scary shows aren’t usually my thing, but I got hooked from the first episode of 30 Coins (30 monedas) and waited with bated breath each week for the next episode. So I and the rest of the show’s fans are/will be thrilled that it’s coming back for a second season.
Following the events in Season 1, the second season finds most of the people of Pedraza have lost their minds, confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena (Megan Montaner, Velvet Colección, The Embassy) lies in a coma in Madrid hospital; Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Sky Rojo, Velvet), shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror grows around them, our heroes must face a new enemy — someone so perverse that even the devil fears him. But what about Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández, Criminal: Spain, The Zone)? Has he died, along with his archenemy, Cardinal Santoro (Manolo Solo, Apaches)? Where do they hide, the tortured souls?
Directed by Álex de la Iglesia (The Oxford Murders) and co-written by de la Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría (Outlaws), the eight-episode second season will begin principal photography this month, with shooting to take place in Spain, Italy, the US, France, and the UK.
Said de la Iglesia:
“If the first season was the gathering of the storm clouds, the second will be the maelstrom preceding an epic storm. The characters are involved in a hellish plot, where death and resurrection are two sides of the same coin.”
30 Coins: Season 2 will debut on HBO in the US and will be available to stream on HBO Max worldwide in 2023.
The Executive Producers are Steve Matthews, Miguel Salvat, and Antony Root for HBO Max, and Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang for Pokeepsie Films.
Stay tuned for updates.
