Created and directed by Niccolò Ammaniti, Anna is inspired by his eponymous novel — one of the author’s best-loved to date (published in Italy by Einaudi). It is the second television project penned by the author, who won the prestigious Premio Strega literary award following the success of The Miracle (which was adapted into the hit TV series of the same name).

Anna is a dystopian story of a ravaged world destroyed by a virus that kills adults but spares children. Set amongst parched fields and mysterious forests, the crumbling hulks of shopping malls and abandoned cities pierce deserted, wide-open spaces on an island reclaimed by nature and run by savage communities of survivors, most of whom are children. Anna only has one guide: a book left by her mother with instructions on how to survive. But, with each passing day, she discovers that the old rules no longer apply, and instead has to make up new ones as she goes along. As Anna’s journey unfolds, she is forced to battle adversity and confront any danger to survive.

Newcomer Giulia Dragotto plays the lead role of the teenager who sets off in search of her kidnapped brother, Astor, played by 9-year-old Alessandro Pecorella, who is also making his television debut.

Said Lisa Honig, Senior EVP International Distribution at Fremantle:

“We are thrilled to be working with AMC+ to bring Niccolo’s visionary tale, Anna, to an international audience. Utterly mesmerising, Anna is a contemporary fable about battling adversity in a post-apocalyptic world. This stunning, atmospheric production raises universal issues of love, loss, heartbreak and hope, and showcases a brilliant cast of fresh talent. We can’t wait to take the AMC+ audience on this journey.”

Added Courtney Thomasma, General Manager of AMC+:

“We’re excited to partner with Fremantle to bring AMC+ subscribers this visionary series from acclaimed filmmaker and novelist Niccolò Ammaniti. With a riveting adaptation of a beloved novel, extraordinary production values, and a post-virus world that is eerily all too relatable, Anna is a unique addition to the type of innovative, international content that we’re continuing to curate for AMC+ subscribers.”

A Sky Original series commissioned by Sky Studios for Sky Italia, Anna is produced by Mario Gianani (My Brilliant Friend) and Lorenzo Mieli (Thou Shalt Not Kill) with Lorenzo Gangarossa (We Are Who We Are) for Wildside, a Fremantle company, in co-production with ARTE France, Fremantle, The New Life Company, and Kwaï, and with the support of Creative Europe – Media Programme of the European Union. Niccolò Ammaniti directs the series and crafted the screenplay with Francesca Manieri (The Miracle).

Anna premieres in the US on Thursday, November 18, exclusively on AMC+.
