Hulu is bringing another Euro TV series to stateside fans. This time it’s the highly-anticipated new German drama, Das Boot.
Das Boot, an eight-part event series, has been pre-sold to more than 100 territories, and thanks to Hulu, the United States is one of them.
It’s a sequel to Das Boot, the classic 1981 anti-war film by Wolfgang Petersen, which was adapted from Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s best-selling novel of the same name and nominated for six Academy Awards.
Opening in the fall of 1942 in Nazi-occupied France, Das Boot the miniseries follows a young submarine crew on a dangerous surveillance mission, as the Resistance begins to gain influence at the French port of La Rochelle.
Aboard Nazi submarine U-612 are 40 young men about to go on their first mission. Led by the new commander, Klaus Hoffmann, the crewmen prepare to head into increasingly brutal warfare on a u-boat that is about to make its maiden voyage.
Life underwater takes its toll. As the men struggle with the submarine’s cramped and claustrophobic conditions, tensions rise, personalities are pushed to the limit, and loyalties begin to shatter.
Meanwhile, at La Rochelle, navy translator Simone Strasser is engulfed in a dangerous liaison and forbidden love — torn between her loyalty to Germany and the French Resistance — and finds her life spiraling out of control and herself questioning everything.
Das Boot features an international cast, including Lizzy Caplan (Masters of Sex), Tom Wlaschiha (Game of Thrones), Vicky Krieps (The Phantom Thread), August Wittgenstein (The Crown), Rainer Bock (1864), Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men), James D’Arcy (Agent Carter), and Thierry Frémont (The Tunnel).
Also appearing are Rick Okon (Homicide Unit Istanbul), Leonard Scheicher (The Silent Revolution), Stefan Konarske (Victor Hugo – Enemy of the State), Robert Stadlober (Line of Separation), Franz Dinda (Babylon Berlin), Pit Bukowski (Babylon Berlin), Philip Birnstiel (The Comforts of Living Alone), and Julius Feldmeier (Babylon Berlin).
A production of Bavaria Fiction, Sky Deutschland, and Sonar Entertainment, the series is directed by Andreas Prochaska (Anatomy of Evil, The Dark Valley) and produced by Oliver Vogel and Jan S. Kaiser for Bavaria Fiction, Marcus Ammon and Frank Jastfelder for Sky Deutschland, and Jenna Santoianni for Sonar Entertainment.
Das Boot premieres Friday, November 23, across German-speaking Europe on Sky Deutschland, as well as in the UK and Ireland on Sky.
Hulu hasn’t announced the premiere date yet, so stay tuned for updates.
