Is it just me or did this short work week feel like it was longer? Regardless, TGIF is here and my weekend binge-pick is Code 37: Sex Crimes, a gritty crime drama from Belgium.
The stories in Code 37: Sex Crimes are about just that: sexual assaults, rape, incest, child pornography, pedophilia, and prostitution, as well as activities like sexually-related exhibitionism and voyeurism, which are illegal in Belgium.
The series stars Veerle Baetens (Beyond the Walls, The Team, Cordon — who is fast becoming one of my favorite Euro TV actresses) as Hannah Maes, the beautiful and ballsy new chief inspector of the all-male vice squad in the Ghent police department.
Hannah’s first day on the job finds her and her team — including veteran vice cop Charles (Marc Lauwrys, Tom & Harry), mister macho Bob (Michael Pas, Cordon), and computer geek Kevin (Gilles De Schrijver, The Missing) — investigating the murder of a woman found naked and dead in a hotel room. It turns out she was a married nympho with a secret life and a particular fetish, but who amongst the men she hooked up with could have killed her, even if it was an accident?
In another case, a woman in hospital tells Hannah the man who beat her up badly is a guy she met at a bar. Despite the massive amount of bruising and pain inflicted on her, she doesn’t want to press charges. Hannah, though, won’t let that stop the investigation. But how does she and her team find the attacker when the victim won’t cooperate?
Outside of work, Hannah is investigating, in an unofficial capacity, a case that is much closer to home: the brutal rape of her mother during a home invasion. The attack, which Hannah and her father witnessed, has haunted her for nearly a decade, and she is on the hunt for the monster. But getting access to the police case file is going to take more than waving her badge.
