Helsinki Crimes: Season 2 (Harjunpää) (Finland)

Based on the “Detective Harjunpää” crime novels by Matti Yrjänä Joensuu, this crime drama series follows detective Timo Harjunpää (Olli Rahkonen, Exit) and his partner, Onerva Nykänen (Olga Temonen, Vares X), as they investigate crimes in Finland’s capital.

In Season 2, Harjunpää and Nykänen have a new colleague, Vesa “Bingo” Sorvali (Matti Onnismaa, Arctic Circle), an alcoholic cop who’s been transferred from one department to another, and is now working with them in the murder squad. Speaking of, one of their cases is the murder of an architect. There’s also a guy running love scams, and another who’s just plain bizarre; he sneaks into homes at night and simply lies next to the sleeping residents without harming them. That cannot be said for the rival youth groups from East Helsinki and Espoo who are escalating their gang war.

Meanwhile, Harjunpää is concerned for both his father and his daughter. The former is experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s, and the latter is experimenting with alcohol and questionable friendships. As for Nykänen, she finds herself at a crossroads in her personal life, struggling to embrace a new relationship with a man she fears is too good for her while questioning her future in the police force.

Helsinki Crimes: Season 2 premieres Friday, March 13.

Winter Palace (Switzerland-France)

Here’s a bilingual (French and English) period drama series that’s the opposite of Seaside Hotel in terms of its setting, but, similar to it, is filled with drama between the owners, investors, staff, and guests. Set in the Swiss Alps in 1899, it tells the story of how Switzerland becomes a year-round tourism destination thanks to André Morel (Cyril Metzger, Off Season, Happening), a young Swiss hotelier who sets about opening a five-star hotel that stays open during the harsh winter season.
