Viaplay Content Distribution has announced the new contemporary Nordic drama series Secrets, starring Pilou Asbæk, Iben Hjejle, and Evin Ahmad.
Secrets (Den Gode Stemning) sounds like quite a juicy drama for us to sink our teeth (and eyeballs) into. Starring Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones, The Investigation), Iben Hjejle (Dicte, High Fidelity), and Evin Ahmad (Who Is Erin Carter?, Snabba Cash), the eight-episode Danish series, about family relationships, abuse and co-dependency, follows two adult siblings as they struggle to set boundaries and free themselves from old patterns.
In Secrets, Mads (Pilou Asbæk) and his sister, Eva (Iben Hjejle), live in neighboring apartments in Copenhagen with their respective families. From the outside, it appears that the siblings come from a pleasant and well- functioning family; however, beyond the facade it is deeply dysfunctional.
Music teacher Mads avoids his predictable, pedestrian life and family responsibilities by partying. Hard. But escaping into his world of alcohol, drugs, and prostitutes becomes increasingly difficult to hide from his loved ones. Despite his efforts to conceal his behavior from his wife, Kristina (Evin Ahmad), Eva, and his colleagues, the weight of broken promises and poor excuses is bound to catch up with him.
Meanwhile, Eva’s architectural firm faces a serious crisis when they lose a vital contract due to the tragic death of their contact person in a car accident. Desperate times call for desperate measures, so Eva resorts to dubious methods to hide the crisis from those around her — not least because the deceased was also her lover. Eva must now do whatever it takes to save both her company and her marriage.
Throughout the series, we follow Eva and Mads as they struggle to break free from old patterns and build better lives for themselves. As drugs take over more of Mads’s life, not only does his world fall apart, but Eva’s does too. As his big sister, she has always protected him, but now she must confront the limits of how far she will go to save him… Or will she?
The cast also includes Rasmus Botoft (Seaside Hotel, The Legacy), Thomas Hwan (Follow the Money, Darkness: Those Who Kill), and Tammi Øst (DNA, Baby Fever), amongst others.
A production of Monday Scripted, Secrets is directed by Kaspar Munk (Ride Upon the Storm, The Rain), and created and written by Munk and Lone Hørslev. It is produced by Anders Toft Andersen (Follow the Money, The Killing) and Rasmus Kastberg (Bamse, Tinkas Juleeventyr).
Global sales are handled by Viaplay Content Distribution, which has already secured pre-sales for the series in Spain, Australia, Indonesia, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and Greece. Some of the partnering platforms and broadcasters that will launch the show include SBS in Australia, EITB in Basque Spain, Pickbox in Croatia, and Vodafone TV in Greece, amongst others.
For viewers in the US and Canada, Secrets will premiere later this year on Viaplay Content Distribution’s SVOD partner channels, including Viaplay on Prime Video, Comcast Xfinity, Roku, and Xumo.
Stay tuned for updates.
