Hulu and Disney+ have set the premiere date for the new French biopic miniseries Becoming Karl Lagerfeld (Kaiser Karl). Check out the teaser.
Based on the best-selling book Kaiser Karl: The Life of Karl Lagerfeld by Raphaëlle Bacqué, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld stars Daniel Brühl (All Quiet on the Western Front, Captain America: Civil War, Inglourious Basterds) as famed designer Karl Lagerfeld during his early days in the 1970s, before he became an icon of the fashion world.
Set in the 1970s, the miniseries follows this complex and iconic personality of Parisian couture from Paris to Monaco and Rome, as he strives to become the Emperor of Fashion.
It opens in 1972, when Karl Lagerfeld is 38 and not yet wearing his iconic hairstyle. He is a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public. While Karl meets and falls in love with the sultry Jacques de Bascher, an ambitious and troubling young dandy, this most mysterious of fashion designers dares to take on his friend (and rival) Yves Saint Laurent, a genius of haute couture backed by the redoubtable businessman Pierre Bergé.
Becoming Karl Lagerfeld premieres globally as a six-episode binge on Friday, June 7, exclusively on Disney+, with the miniseries streaming in the US on Hulu.
Costars include Théodore Pellerin (The OA, Maid) as Jacques de Bascher, Arnaud Valois (120 BPM, The Girl on the Train) as Yves Saint Laurent, and Alex Lutz (Guy, Baron noir) as Pierre Bergé. The cast also features Agnès Jaoui (En Thérapie, The Taste of Others) as Gabrielle Aghion, the founder of the Chloé fashion house, who contributed greatly to Lagerfeld’s fame.
Created by Isaure Pisani-Ferry (Ganglands, Vampires, Kaboul Kitchen), along with Jennifer Have (Agatha Christie’s Criminal Games, The Red Band Society) and Raphaëlle Bacqué, the series is written by lead writer Pisani-Ferry, Have, Dominique Baumard (Ganglands, The Bureau), and Nathalie Hertzberg (Les Petits Meurtres d’Agatha Christie, The Goldman Case).
The directors are Jérôme Salle (Kompromat, Totems) (episodes 1, 2, 6), who also executive produces, and Audrey Estrougo (Everything Is Fine, Suprêmes) (episodes 3, 4, 5). The producers are Isabelle Degeorges (Lupin, The Art of Crime) for Gaumont and Arnaud de Crémiers (The Art of Crime, Nona and Her Daughters) for Jour Premier.
