The highly-anticipated third and final season of the Danish supernatural series The Kingdom premieres in the US in one month, and I cannot wait! Check out the trailer!
As announced back in July, global streaming service Mubi acquired all three seasons of The Kingdom (Riget), the supernatural-horror series created by Oscar® nominee Lars von Trier (Dancer in the Dark, Breaking the Waves), for audiences in North America, the UK, Ireland, Latin America, Turkey, and India.
Mubi’s release schedule for the series is as follows:
- The Kingdom: Season 1 — begins streaming Sunday, November 13
- The Kingdom: Season 2 — begins streaming Sunday, November 20
- The Kingdom Exodus — premieres Sunday, November 27
It feels like forever ago when I watched Seasons 1 and 2, and while I recall bits and pieces of the show (the spooky nightly appearance and disappearance of an ambulance, the ghostly sound of a girl crying, the Swedish surgeon standing on the roof of the hospital railing about the Danes), what stands out is my thinking that it was bizarre — a creepy but good kind of bizarre. So I’m excited for Season 3, titled The Kingdom Exodus (Riget Exodus).
If you’re not familiar with the series, here’s an overview:
The Kingdom is a supernatural story about Rigshospitalet, aka Riget — a hospital built on top of the old bleaching ponds in Copenhagen — where evil has taken root, where medical science faces a daily struggle with itself, and where the mysterious and inexplicable blend together in a mixture of horror and humor. Folks loved it, and the show went on to become a cult classic. More recently, the first two seasons (eight episodes) have been fully restored.
The third and final season (five episodes) sees the gate to the Kingdom open once more. A sleepwalking woman wanders into the night and inexplicably ends up at the hospital, seeking answers to the series’ unresolved questions in order to save the hospital from doom…
The final season features various characters from the earlier seasons of The Kingdom as well as new ones. Actors who appear in all three seasons include Ghita Nørby (The Eagle), Søren Pilmark (Atlantic Crossing), Peter Mygind (The Sommerdahl Murders), Laura Christensen (The Investigation), Henning Jensen (When the Dust Settles), and Solbjørg Højfeldt (Darkness: Those Who Kill), amongst others.
The star-studded cast in Season 3 includes Lars Mikkelsen (Borgen), Mikael Persbrandt (Beck), Nikolaj Lie Kaas (The Killing), Nicolas Bro (The Bridge), Tuva Novotny (Crimes of Passion), Ida Engvoll (Love & Anarchy), and Bodil Jørgensen (Seaside Hotel), along with guest stars David Dencik (Chernobyl) and Alexander Skarsgård (Big Little Lies).
